The Houston Chronicle reports that, “much of the extra money can be attributed to record oil prices. While motorists are being socked with ever-increasing gasoline costs, oil and gas employment in Gov. Rick Perry proposes to return part of the money to the taxpayers in the form of tax cuts or rebate checks, but those steps would need legislative action. written by Lee , May 07, 2008 Would a surplus of that magintude allow the state to maintain state parks, repair roads, build non-toll road highways, insure more indigent children and more?

written by Ricky , May 07, 2008 Democrats and President Bush are starting to sound the same. Democrats believe in the motto: "All Democrats are good and all Republicans are bad." Bush is famous for saying: "Either you are for us or against us."

written by Steven , May 07, 2008 There's going to be a infrastructure and energy crisis across this country for many years to come. Texas ought to apply these monies to create a competitive advantage for the state.

written by Holy Roller , May 07, 2008 The hell with rebates. We need roads paid for. I hope Texans grow tired of Perry's "fly by the seat of your pants" budgeting.

written by BL Marks , May 07, 2008 Although Texans understand that we need to invest in our infrastructure, its state leadership (Gov., Speaker, Lite Gov) still doesn't get it. Why not use the surplus to improve transportation infrastructure (without tolls, imagine that) and invest in alternative energy development. Maybe use Gov. Goodhair's slush fund too. We could position ourselves for the future.

written by Roger Herrera , May 07, 2008 I'll take my rebate check, thank you. I pay enough in taxes already. Notice all the out of town license plates driving around Dallas. Thank God I'm a Texan. Say what you want about Pres George W, he's been good for Texas.

written by Danilo , May 07, 2008 What the state should do is invest some of that money for use if the Texas economy turns sour and tax revenues fall. We might even look into property tax reductions. God knows we have some of the highest around, and that discourages real-estate investment, contributing to the housing downturn. But in terms if infrastructure, Texans didn't want the TTC, so apparently the need for infrastructure development isn't THAT pressing. Perry should NOT blow billions on a publicly-funded highway when we had a privately-funded one ready to go.

written by Holy Roller , May 08, 2008 Who cares where someone is from? They still drive on the damn roads that are falling apart and are inadequate to meet traffic demands. Roger, just remember that people from "out of town" got Dallas out of the backwoods and into the 21st century. It's time for the TX government to catch up too.

written by allan , May 21, 2008 If the state can not find anything to do with the surplus, then I think that the state should do somthing smart with the money. Like, oh I dont know, maybe, put it in the bank and let it sit there, in case the state ot Texas, needs it in the future. And we need to make real, flippin sure, that ONLY AMERICANS, not those stinking, slimy freeloading illegal mexicans, get the use of the money. But that is just what I think. Write comment
