Atlanta Pays $1.5 Million for 5 Toilets PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, May 5, 2008, 11:53 AM

The City of Atlanta purchased five public toilets at $300,000 a piece, which totals $1.5 million.

According to WSB TV Atlanta Channel 2 News Web site, “the facilities feature automatic doors, sinks and seats. They even play music while users take care of their business. Some are questioning the spending at a time when the City is laying off hundreds of people.”

Barbara Payne of the Fulton County Taxpayers Foundation sarcastically feigned surprise when she discovered the toilets were not made of gold.

The top-of-the-line toilets are found around the City including Woodruff Park, Piedmont Park and directly behind Atlanta City Hall and some are only open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A few Atlanta residents are not disturbed by the high cost of the toilets. CNN quotes Joseph St. Jean, who opened a trolley tour line for visitors, as saying, “it sounds a little pricey, but I also think the City is working on its image to promote people coming to the City.”

Surprised Atlanta paid anything at all. These modern facilities typically come with advert systems which can defray the cost to the public. San Francisco has these terrific sanitary toilets which self clean after every use were developed by a French water company and are well liked. They look good and work well. Better than an ugly nasty smelling porta-potty.
