Health Officials Fear Measles Outbreak PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, May 2, 2008, 01:26 PM

On Thursday, federal health officials warned that the U.S. could be on the verge of a major outbreak of measles, a viral disease that had been declared wiped-out in this country in 2000.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “the official tally of measles cases between Jan. 1 and April 25 totaled 64, the highest number in six years, officials from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.”

Earlier this week, eight more cases were reported among members of a single family who attended a religious conference in Washington State.

Even though the numbers seem small, two developments could set the stage for resurgence in the nation: an increasing number of people choosing not to get vaccinated and an ongoing outbreak of the disease in Israel and Europe.

No deaths have been reported, however 14 people were hospitalized.
