Methodists Strongly Reject SMU Bush Library PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, May 2, 2008, 12:17 PM

Bush library SMU.jpgAt the quadrennial General Conference of the United Methodist Church in Fort Worth on Wednesday, members rejected locating the George W. Bush Presidential Library at Southern Methodist University (SMU) by an astounding vote of 844 to 20.

According to OEN, op-ed news Web site, “this (Methodist) body is the highest authority of the denomination and can-not be over-ruled by any other body in the denomination.”

Rev. Andrew J. Weaver, Ph.D., has been spearheading the efforts to prevent SMU from building the George W. Bush Presidential Library on campus.

I imagine UT-Arlington will take the museum. They have taken everything else from Dallas. The Rangers, The Cowboys, etc.

Dallas never had this "museum", or library, or whatever (thanks be to God). SMU is located in University Park. As long as Dallas taxpayers are not subsidizing it in any way, they can put it in Crawford, as far as I care.

Question: What does this mean? Is SMU independent of the GCUMC, or can it make its own deals? The article does not make it clear.

Comment: I find it difficult to understand the hate toward Bush expressed by so many left-wingers, as well as the similar expressions toward Clinton by those on the right, although the odium directed at the (proposed?) Bush Library at SMU is more virulent. The snarling is palpable. That said, neither hosting nor visiting a Presidential Library is not necessarily an endorsement of that President’s policies. A Presidential Library is a valuable resource to have, if only as a time capsule of an era.

Bob, an answer to your question isn't that difficult. Look at Bush's record. Historians are already debating whether or not the Bush admin is the worst in US history or just in the bottom three. And that is just with what's public about this most secretive presidency. Pick a subject (habaeus corpus, legalized torture, fiscal responsibility, leadership, the environment, war profiteering, etc...) and the Bush admin seems to do the absolute worst it can. The question isn't be why is there so much vitriol at this bunch, the question should be how can there be any decent folks still supporting them and giving
them the benefit of the doubt?

As far as the Methodists go, perhaps they want to avoid GFS (Goat ****er Syndrome). This is in reference to the old joke about a man who has done great deeds for his town but all anyone remembers him for is getting caught in a compromising position with a goat.

This Story is COMPLETELY FALSE, and has already been widely corrected by even the most liberal blog sites. I have to wonder why this site isn't as concerned with truth in reporting. This story, citing ONLY an unconfirmed press release to a site called 'ImpeachForPeace.org', is the epitomy of poor fact checking & no-thought reporting, regardless of your take on Bush & his library. We can do better than this!

here is a link to a more responsible site's correction: http://www.pegasusnews.com/new...st-church/

A reliable source forwarded the article to me. I had no reason to believe it was false, because Bush is an unpopular president and many Methodists are unhappy with his administration.

El Hombre: Thank you for your comments. As a historian myself, I know it is always dangerous to judge your contemporaries, a particularly Presidents. Truman left office with a terrible reputation, even among Democrats. As for the issue mentioned: Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, and jailed state legislators in Maryland. It turned out to be the right thing to do. As for torture of terrorist leaders, if it will save even one American live, I have no problem with it. Fiscal responsibility and leadership: I tend to agree with you; Bush has not been effective there. Part of his problem is that he is a poor communicator (of course some of the worst tyrants in history were fantastically effective communicators). The environment: you must be specific; that covers many issues, not all of them related. War profiteering? Who is profiting? I admit to doing very well with the Halliburton stock I purchased in 2000, so could have anyone else who paid attention and used their common sense. Have not done so well with others.
