John O. Kohler, an American journalist, is the author of the book entitled, “It’s About the Pope: Spies in the Vatican.” He claims to have obtained documents that reveal Mikhail Gorbachev, the former leader of the Soviet Union, signed an informal death sentence on John Paul II., the late pope.

The CFP, a Canadian news Web site, reports that, “the author unearthed a Kremlin document, which listed Soviet Politburo members, who had signed an ‘informal death sentence’ on the Polish pope, and ‘if necessary reach to means beyond disinformation and discreditation.’ This instruction was given to their subordinates in the KGB by members of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party in 1979.”

The party document, obtained by Mr. Kohler, listed nine prominent Soviet CP members as signing the “informal” death warrant, which also included Gorbachev’s signature. The book was released in Poland on Monday, April 28 by ZNAK Publishing House, which is known for publishing books on the late pope.
