British Inmate Calls Prison a ‘Luxury’ PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Apr 28, 2008, 03:28 PM

British luxury prison.jpgDonald Kelleher, 37, an inmate at HMP Cardiff (British prison), said he is enjoying a “luxury life” in prison and would prefer staying in the correctional facility instead of regaining his freedom. He was imprisoned for repeatedly stabbing his wife.

Kelleher boasts that his “en suite” accommodations are “outstanding.” He is rewarded with enough money each week to purchase cigarettes, chocolate and “other luxury goods,” so long as he participates in a “math” educational program.

According to the Telegraph of London, “a prison officer, who has worked at Cardiff for 15 years, said last week that inmates were simply sitting in their cells watching snooker on television or playing computer games.”

The health care center in Cardiff is top-of-the-line, which puts hospitals on the outside to shame. Inmates would have an easier time seeing a dentist inside in the prison than if they returned to civilian life.

The Telegraph quotes a letter from Kelleher as saying, “I am better off in here. I can only imagine how cold it was this winter living on the streets. May I just say that the food and accommodation is of outstanding quality here. We have color TVs; on sweet facilities … The staff is very friendly and helpful.
