This would prohibit some tourists from hiking into the Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Those caught in the Amazon, without a permit, could face a fine amounting to $60,000. Fox News reports that, “the government plans to send to Congress a bill to require the permits within months, National Justice Secretary Romeau Tuma Jr. told the Associated Press.” The bill is designed to prevent so-called foreign meddling and illegal activities. It would cover any activity in the area Brazil considers the ‘legal Amazon’ including, business trips, nature tours or visits to any cities across 2 million square miles. Conservative politicians and military authorities in Brazil are growing suspicious of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working to save the rain forest and Indians. They fear that the NGOs are trying to take control of the Amazon and take away its riches from the country.
