German Artist Seeks Volunteer to Die PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Apr 25, 2008, 04:04 PM

Brandenburg Gate.jpgGeorge Schneider, a prize-winning artist from Germany, is seeking a volunteer, who is willing to die for his art project. He wants a person to spend their dying hours inside an art gallery with the public witnessing the event to see the way light plays on the flesh of someone gasping for their last breath.

Fox News reports that, “politicians and curators are in a state of uproar about Schneider’s plans. The 39-year-old artist has been concerned with death for much of his career … He has been hatching his current idea since 1996, and now has a sympathetic pathologist and art collector to help find a candidate who wants to become a work of art in the final days of his or her life.”

The morbid German artist promises to make the dying person the “absolute center of attention.” But Beatrix Kalwa, spoke for many Germany curators who vow to refuse to give space to Schneider’s artistic endeavor.

As Schneider's subject, I nominate Nicaraguan artist Gilliermo "Habacuc" Vargas, now internationally known, for a identical feat of performance art using a starving stray dog. I don't understand the reluctance of the curators. Is this not true 21st century art?
