Michelle Obama's College Thesis Excerpts PDF Print E-mail

Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community
by Michelle LaVaughn Robinson

A Thesis Presented to Princeton University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Department of Sociology Here are some excerpts from pages 2-3 of the Thesis:

Earlier in my college career, there was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the Black community I was somehow ob1igated to this community and would utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit this community first and foremost. My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my B1ackness than ever before. I have found that at Princeton no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my White professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don't belong. Regardless of the circumstances under which I interact with Whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be Black first and a student second.

These experiences have made it apparent to me that the path I have chosen to follow by attending Princeton will likely lead to my further integration and/or assimilation into a White cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant. This realization has presently, made my goals to actively utilize my resources to benefit the Black community more desirable.

At the same time, however, it is conceivable that my four years of exposure to a predominately White, Ivy League University has instilled within me certain conservative values.

For example, as I enter my final year at Princeton, 1 find myself striving for many of the same goals as my White classmates--acceptance to a prestigious graduate or professional school or a high paying position in a successful corporation. Thus, my goals after Princeton are not as clear as before.

Michelle Obama made the time to post Excerpts on this little old blog, huh?

Right.

Why isn't the author of this post honest enough to use their own name?

Why would DallasBlog allow a post without the actual author's name?

Let's find some integrity people.

These were excerpts forwarded to me from a different source than Michelle Obama. I put Michelle's name as the author, because I didn't summarize her thesis. When I post press releases, I do not use my name either.

I adore Michelle Obama & I really don't see the significance of her statements. They are what you'd expect from any 20 year old: trite, overly contextual & dramatic. No story here.

Did you even bother to proof the OCR software?

What has Mrs. Obama ever done FOR the black community? What has she ever stood up for and helped others achieve? She grew up upper middle class and well off, then went to Princeton, and freely chose to follow the very same path as most princetonians do pursuing admission to top law schools and business opportunities. What does being black at princeton have to to do with any of that - especially when Mrs. O has achieved everything she personally set out for? Isn't this thesis really talking about class and social strata imbued issues and not typical race issues, especially given that not just the black community is made to feel "excluded" from such elitism? Wouldn't a hispanic culturally feel the very same exclusion at Princeton? So where in this these does she consider the plight of others? This thesis sounds like a self served exercise dressed up as an academic study. There is nothing worse then someone who pontificates about suffering from something they have never been held back by, and worse still, never something they stood up for and used their power to help others. Kinda like Obama's 2 books - he's a rich dude for writing total drivel and being famous for nothing more than spinning pretty (but empty and shallow) rhetoric.

The article above is about one of Michelle Obama's two white roommates at Princeton. One of whom, called her mother immediately upon realizing her new roommate was black and demonstrably upset because of it. Her mother in turn called the college demanding her daughter be given another roommate.

Catherine Donnelly and her conservative mother, felt the need to clear the air about their college prejudices once they realized that Catherine's former roommate could potentially become the new First Lady.

I would suggest you print the article before any more of your readers embarrass themselves any further. The comments reaffirm Obama's thesis and confirm the feelings that it came from and she goes on to take up for Rev. Wright as well.

Tom: I agree with the blogger. Readers deserve to know where stuff comes from. Obviously, Michelle Obama did not make this post. So who was the source who excerpted the thesis? This is different from a press release because people can see where it comes from.

Right on, Nobody's fool. Everyone needs to get real about the Obamas. Stop the drama, get real, Obama. The Obamas keep playing the race card while they protest about the race card. The guy is a fluff. Mary Ellen

Tom. This is an attempt to stir up controversy. When Bill Clinton ran for office, I am sure no one took the time to post selected writings by Hillary Clinton on the internet. This is stupid and part of the reason I have decided to limit my time reading the junk on this blog. Between efforts like this and racist, ignorant Reza, this blog is disheartening and a turn-off to intelligent thinking individuals. This posting only shows your insensitivity toward young African American scholars.

Michelle Obama is not running for office - get over it!
