Valdez Campaign Discounts Opposition Poll PDF Print E-mail
by Carolyn Barta    Mon, Apr 21, 2008, 10:17 PM

Sheriff Lupe Valdez’ campaign manager Kirk McPike said Monday that Republican voters showed strong reservations about GOP candidate Lowell Cannaday’s credentials by forcing him into an embarrassing runoff with former Sheriff Jim Bowles. “Despite the fact that he spent over a quarter of a million dollars and had the support of the entire Republican establishment, Mr. Cannaday struggled to win his own primary,” McPike said.

McPike made the comments on the heels of a poll released by the Cannaday campaign, detailed earlier on Dallas Blog, that claims the two candidates are in a dead heat.  McPike noted that Valdez won more votes in the Democratic primary than all of the Republican candidates combined in their primary and said she is focused on issues as the general election campaign begins, such as continuing to turn around problems at the county jail.

Yes, 89% is a real struggle.

As to the fact that Democrats outvoted Republicans in the primary, I will only point out that the same happened in reverse in 2006.

Does the continuing contest for the Democratic presidential nomination show that Democrats have strong reservations about both Clinton and Obama?

I think everyone knows why the democrats turned out in great numbers. Maybe it was because you had two equally strong democrate candidates running for president, whereas the republicans only had McCain, actually to worry about. I feel even democrates will vote republican in the general election, because of Valdez's poor record.

Amen Deacon! This is one Democrat that will absolutely be voting republican come the next Sheriff election. Lupe has all the personality of a cabbage. She can't remember anyone's name, even if they have met her a number of times, and given her rather large amounts of money. If someone personally hands you a large check, and the next week you call them up and ask for a check because your "records" indicate they have not yet contributed, and you can not remember the fifteen minute conversation you had with said person, you don't have the skills needed to be a politician.

What a weak anology McPike gives. Everyone had this pie in the sjy idea that because Valdez was a federal agent, that she would be some type of savior for the DCSO. What a dark cloud of incompetence. Being a fenderal officer gives you absolutley no experience or training to run a local law enforcement agency, (as reinforced by the current situation). Lowell Cannaday will be a breath of fresh air...he is well respected, highly competent, a proven entity. As a blue collar Democrat, Thats the kind of leader I want for my local government.

And if you look at her federal work record she never worked at one position more than 3 years. Most were 1 to 2 years. In the federal system it is easier to move them than fire them so guess what they did to Lupe? She never did anything outstanding during her "tenure" as a "federal Agent". The agents and officers ones I have talked with that actually had to work with her felt she could not be depended on and was unable to function alone and without help.

What arrogance from Mr. McPunk! Lupe had 51% of the votes in her election. Im not a mathmetician, but know that means that 49% of Democrats are not happy with Ms. Valdez. If he thinks Lowell should be embarassed by his primary then he should look at his own numbers, because he would see that her primary was no cake walk.
