Among the most noticeable changes since Rupert Murdoch took over the Wall Street Journal is its stepped-up political coverage. Today's paper is a good example -- two excellent page one stories about the Democratic race for the nomination and an expanded opinion section. One story explains how Obama honed his political tactics during his Chicago days. The other story by longtime Journal political writer says party leaders, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, plan to push super delegates to pick a candidate as soon as the primaries end in June, to avoid a convention fight. I put both in the Need Read catagory. The daily opinion section grows to three pages and will include a weekly column by Thomas Frank on Wednesdays, adding a prominent left-of-center voice to the pages. Frank, author of "What's the Matter with Kansas," writes today on Barack Obama's "bitter" comments on guns and religion. Frank says, "The landmark political fact of our time is the replacement of our middle-class republic by a plutocracy." He pledges his vote to anybody who can reverse that trend.
