Congress Finds Loopholes to Ethics Laws PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sun, Apr 20, 2008, 05:21 PM

Congress loopholes.jpgThe purpose of the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 is to prevent lobbyists from securing undue influence by taking members of Congress to intimate dinners at fancy restaurants.

But, according to the New York Times, “former Senator John B. Breaux, Democrat of Louisiana, said lobbyists had already come up with a way around the new law. They can make a political contribution to a member of Congress, and then have the member pay for the meal.”

Beginning on Monday, Washington lobbyists must file detailed quarterly reports of their activities. Recently, they have been hiring lawyers and attending seminars to decipher the law passed in response to scandals that involved the lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Lobbyists continue to find creative ways to preserve the access and influence they have with Congress and at federal agencies. For decades, lobbyists have registered with Congress. But they didn’t fear the reporting requirements, since they would understate expenses or misrepresent their activities.

In third world foreign countries, they call it bribery. In America, we call it lobbying. This type of legalized bribery continues to have a horrible corrosive effect on our republic, and as shown by this article, the offenders have no intention of curtailing their criminal behavior.

Why do average citizens and voters feel powerless and disenfranchised? Why are they increasingly cynical about the political process? Because they intuitively know that their representatives have prostituted themselves, and have little real allegiance to this country. Nuff said.

Lobbiests DONT CAUSE PROBLEMS

Let special interest pay $$$ to accepting congressfolk.

The real CULPRIT is the apathetic American public who SO OUTNUMBER the $$$ but WANT TO BE LED LIKE SHEEP.

Congress is corrupt NO ONE ARGUES THAT.

But the American voting public by and large are as corrupt so they return the crooks to their seats of power.

Why are lobbyists even necessary? We the people elect a representative government that is supposed to be for the people and by the people. If those elected representatives would actually *work* their districts and study the issues, they would not need others to bribe them (oops, I mean lobby them) how to vote. Ironically, McCain has the ony one for reforming our campaign finance system. Obama is a hypocrite and is worse than the rest taking lots of money from special interest Corporations (look up Exelon Corporation if you want to really be informed of the facts) even though he denounces with hollow words such practices. This goes back to the days when Obama was state senator in IL (the true home of champion political corruption at its finest). So, he learned from the masters of evil.
