Detroit Mayor Charged with Felony-Counts PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Mar 24, 2008, 11:55 AM

Felony Kilpatrick.jpgDemocratic Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit, a one-time rising star and the city’s youngest elected official, was charged today with perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office after sexually-explicit text messages surfaced, that contradicted his sworn denials of an extra-marital affair with a top aide.

Wayne county Prosecutor Kym Worthy also charged Christine Beatty, the former chief of staff, of perjury and obstruction of justice after she denied under oath that she and Kilpatrick had a romantic relationship in 2002 and 2003.

The Houston Chronicle quotes the prosecutor as saying, “just when did honesty and integrity, truth and honor become traits to be mocked, downplayed, ignored, laughed at or excuses made for them? When did telling the truth become a supporting player to everything else?”

Kilpatrick has vowed not to resign as mayor, but the Detroit City Charter calls for any elected official to be removed from office if convicted of a felony.

Interestingly, the words "Democrat" and "Democratic" do not appear in the Houston Chronicle (AP) story.

What a surprise.
