by Tom McGregor    Fri, Mar 21, 2008, 12:10 PM

Bomb Calahorra.jpgA car bomb exploded next to the Guardia Civil barracks (police station) in the north of Spain after receiving a warning call from Basque separatists. It wasn’t clear if anyone was wounded in the blast at Calahorra, a city in the Rioja wine region.

According to BBC News, “Spanish media said the area was cleared before the device went off at (1 p.m. GMT). ETA, which ended a 15-month ceasefire in June, 2007 after failed peace talks, seeks independence for regions in northern Spain and south-west France.

A man, who claimed to represent ETA, called highway police to warn of the car bomb device, pinpointing the location, make and color of the vehicle at around 12:30 p.m. GMT.

The ETA has also been blamed for the killing of a former town councilor in the Basque region two days before the Spanish general election earlier this month.
