Dallas homes received a large and expensive direct mail piece urging voters to support the $1.35 billion school bond election scheduled for May 10, even before there has been much airing of what the bond program contains. The brochure for the campaign, whose slogan is "Our Students Our Future: reveals these proposed expenditures:
The DISD Web site says replacements are planned for O.M. Roberts Elementary, Dade Middle School and Adamson High School, and news campuses include:

written by Nathan , March 21, 2008 Ummm, we just had an election in March and will have another this November. Is the ISD counting on a lower voter turnout to float these bonds?

written by carolyn j. barta , March 22, 2008 Michael: Thanks for a good catch. I have corrected the total amount of the program. There is a difference between an m and a b, isn't there? Also, when you tally up the breakout, it doesn't add up to $1.35 billion because I didn't list every category of expenditures. Hill: According to the Web site list, Julius Frazier will get improvements for the disabled, school modernization, restroom refurbishments, work on the grounds and fire alarm/security system. Also "building envelope" and "MEP" -- whatever that means. Nathan and Nobody's Fool: If they've released the audit, I sure missed it. I do know that they scheduled the bond election when nothing else will be on the ballot so just the "committed" will go to the polls. The improvements are heaviest in southern Dallas -- from Oak Cliff around to Pleasant Grove -- so I expect there to be a big get-out-the-vote effort on the south side of town.

written by Nobody's Fool , March 22, 2008 You mean the $153 million that is unaccounted for? Hate to be a broken record, but is there a DISD audit to review before we vote this?

written by Jim Napper , March 25, 2008 What ? No comment about the 2 extra high schools that somebody pulled out of a a hat? Yep thats right, and the best part about it? Those 2 hischools have a total price tag of $27 million ! Yes only $13.5 million each, evidently. And how about that oh so subliminal cover of a forty year old BEATLES Album on the brochure. DISD has found the legendary "FIFTH BEATLE". Care to look at what the bonds LACKING?

written by Carlos Quintanilla , March 25, 2008 DISD failed in protecting Hispanic children in the Epicenter of North Dallas, over 21 young Hispanic children died of Cheese Heroin and its leadership failed to even respond to the problem of heroin use in its schools until we started a very aggressive community and media outreach campaign. We have sent a letter to Dr. Hinojosa last week and expect a response from him addressing this issue. If DISD cannot protect our children in a responsible manner, with the funds it has, it should not be given any funds from us the taxpayers for any future programs. We have asked DISD to compensate the families of those who died of heroin overdoses and the families of the unacceptable number of children who became addicted to heroin, while under the care and supervision of DISD and have been serviced by Phoenix House and other programs for the past two years. We are asking for ogoing programs that can deal with drug and alcohol abuse. We are asking for programs that will motivate and encourage our children to succeed. We need to improve graduation rates, decrease gang involvement, decrease teen pregnancy, create an enviroment that will stimulate our children to succeed and become productive citizens. I will like to point out that the leadership exist in the trenches with principles and teachers, invest in them. We do not need to feed the construction companies that have become rich building schools and monuments, while our children fail and die. Write comment
