The cut, totaling $90 million, will come from a one-year suspension of the tax that replenishes the state's unemployment fund. The Texas Workforce Commission approved the cut after determining there was enough money to cover unemployment payments in 2008. "I believe in truth-in-budgeting: when government levies a tax and collects more money than is needed, we must either stop collecting the tax, return the money or both," Perry said in a statement.” To read the entire article from the Houston Chronicle, link here: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

written by lee , March 12, 2008 Is that money restricted to the unemployment insurance program? If not, I question the statement that the state has collected "more money than is needed". With the legislature robbing Peter to pay Paul, moving funds from one place to another, could that money not be used for transportation, state parks or many other needs?

written by John McClelland , March 12, 2008 I believe in planning for the future and not living moment to moment. Perry is fiscally irreponsible in his ability to govern on whims.

written by Old Red , March 12, 2008 Perry hands out tax cuts to business because the economy is so "strong" even as Texas State Parks suffer thru deferred maintainance and curtailed hours and staffing cutbacks. But then, parks don't contribute to his party, do they.... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/4081704.html

written by Old Red , March 12, 2008 Where is Perry's concern for small business when it comes to the Trans Texas Corridor he is trying to ram down our collective throats?

written by Byron George , March 12, 2008 Somebody check my math. Doesn't it come to an average of $243 per business? Not much of a cut.

written by randye , March 12, 2008 Somebody needs to find out the answer to Lee's first question as well as what the early pay off of the bonds mean to the program. McGregor? Herrera, you pay it, any idea? My Google-Fu was not up to the task. Lee, wasn't shuffling money around what got Transportation and Parks in the jam there in in t he first place? Write comment
