According to the New York Times, nearly half of African-American teenage women were infected with at least one of the diseases monitors in the study – human papillomavirus (H.P.V.), Chlamydia, herpes simplex type 2 and trichomoniasis, a common parasite. That figure compared with 20 percent of white teenage women.” H.P.V. and Chlamydia were the two most common STDs among all the women tested according to analysis, which was part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.” About 15 percent of the infected women had more than one type of STD. Officials of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention explained that the findings underscore the need for strengthening screening, vaccination and other prevention measures for STD s’, which a re among the nation’s highest public health priorities. written by Grrr , March 12, 2008 The triumph of no sex before marriage education! Growing up Catholic, we used to called it, pardon the expression, "poke & hope." Yet another reason religion has no place in the bedroom. It is surely a place for God, however. I am reminded of a middle eastern saying, "trust in God, but tie up your camel."

written by xyz , March 12, 2008 Actually, it's the result of a lot of sex after a lot of education. Everyone knows the problems are out there. Funny how the old ways seem to work best sometimes.

written by RelicMM , March 12, 2008 Is anyone that views TV for even an hour a day surprised by this obvious effect of its pervasive illicit sexual orientation? STDs are the penalty for illicit sex. "Safe sex", a watchword of Planned Parenthood's sex education obviously does not work. The only thing that is guaranteed to prevent STDs is abstinence. An advanced stage of sexual promiscuity permeates our nation at all levels. If abstinence education works only half the time, it is worth the effort to continue and perhaps expand it. It continues to be the only workable solution for prevention.

written by Grrr , March 12, 2008 RelicMM, "an advanced stage of sexual promiscuity permeates our nation at all levels." Hilarious. I must be in the begining stage or something. I agree that the only guarenteed way to prevent STD's is abstinence. That is unarguable. But you sir, how do you guarantee abtinence? Have you ever been a teenager? I suspect not.

written by lee , March 12, 2008 This just shows the failure of the abstinence approach of the social conservatives. Of course, it is the best way to prevent STD and pregnancy, but it just does not work and needs to be replaced with a realistic approach.

written by RelicMM , March 12, 2008 Lee: What is your realistic approach? Only the moral individual can guarantee abstinence that is the only way to avoid STDs.

written by Old Red , March 12, 2008 Someone should take a poll among these champions of "abstinence education" and them if THEY were all virgins when THEY got married.

written by HSH , March 12, 2008 Actually RelicMM, you're once again spewing empty rhetoric in the face of science and medicine. As the study reiterated, the FDA previously found that latex condoms are "highly effective at preventing infection by chlamydia, trichomoniasis, HIV, gonorrhea and hepatitis B." There is no perfect answer -- prevention and treatment must include abstinence, condoms, and every other medical tool we have to fight this serious problem. It's not about punishment -- it's about health. Tell that to your German Pope.

written by Diane Birdwell , March 13, 2008 As the only apparent teacher on this thread, someone who actually WORKS with teenagers, I can tell you the abstinence only program is a complete failure. The ultra-conservatives--the majority of whom are NOT Catholic, by the way, are the ones who want to deny teenagers access to correct information that will help them make the correct decision: to wait to have sex--or at least to have used protection if they go on ahead and "do it." I had a student who said he could tell if a girl had AIDS by the way she smelled. I knew kids who REUSED condoms. I know of girls who thought that because they had not gotten pregnant after 3 months of sex, that they could not at all. I also know of a pregnant 15 year old who just could not figure out how the baby would come out of her--seriously, she was that ignorant of her own body. The part all the moralists forget is that these kids will be 18 some day. They will get married some day. Why deny them information they will use for their entire adulthoods? These teenagers need to be shown enough respect by adults to appreciate that while they may be mentally immature for sex and its consequences, their bodies are in overdrive.

written by RelicMM , March 13, 2008 Diane: Anyone can tell you that the sex education programs are even more an obvious failure than abstinence and have only succeeded in robbing the young of their innocence. Prevention is far better than teaching "safe sex". Fallen human nature ensures that the problem will be always with us. There is no easy solution. Moral education offers the best choice.
