Instead of discussing Perry’s book, the TV talk show hosts spent most of the time Gov. Perry was on their show peppering him with questions about an upcoming Thursday New York Times story which accused likely Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of ethical lapses. While the Groups like the ACLU claim that they are just promoting “tolerance” by demanding that the Boy Scouts abandon their traditional positions on these issues. That doesn’t sound much like tolerance to me when you try to force this private, non-profit organization to adhere to secular, liberal positions inconsistent with the tenets of the Boy Scouts. What these groups are trying to do in emasculating the Boy Scouts sounds very much like what Pope Benedict calls “the dictatorship of relativism” -- the imposition of their secular liberal values on the rest of us. Gov. Perry talks in his book about the importance of standing up to the intimidation and the threat of lawsuits against good organizations like the Boy Scouts if we want to preserve our culture: “The culture war will be lost before we know it,” if these tactic succeed, says the Governor. Kudos to Governor Perry for taking the Boy Scouts' side in this ongoing cultural battle over the future direction of our nation.

written by jjc , February 22, 2008 OK - maybe it's just me but first, let's keep the Pope away from the boy scouts. Seems to be simply pandering / positioning by Perry. But do we really still believe there is a culture war going on? Really? Is that the most important war going on right now? Or it is the one that sells books and raises money? And this old issue of the ACLU, gays and the boy scouts? There is no fight here - civilization is not at risk. In a country with a 9 trillion dollar debt, a broken economy, open borders...Perry writes a book about boy scouts and culture wars? So 90s. Silly. Transparent. And actually I would like to see him running the state instead of working out his Gulianni man-crush or writing bedtime stories for right-wing wackos. Let's deal with facts and reality - and solve some of these problems. Politics and emotion are not going to get us there.

written by Richard Hasting , February 25, 2008 As a right wing whacko (Meaning someone that differs in view from JJC, and as an Eagle Scout, 1979, as a father to 2 boy scouts) I happen to think that this discussion is incredibly relevant. My kids are bombarded with liberal theology for 6 hours a day at school, and the ACLU is telling me that Scouts can't tell them any different? Boy Scouts hasn't changed, it isn't like boy scouts woke up one day and decided to eliminate homosexuals from the platform. Homosexual activists target the boy scouts because of one thing.. "On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty, to God and my Country. To serve other people at all times and to obey the Scout law. To keep myself physically strong mentally awake and morally straight." Activists want to take out "God" and "Straight". Understand to that Scouts takes extraordinary care in regard to the youth. An adult cannot meet alone with a youth. It is just not allowed. Scouting is a place where every child can feel safe. When I was a junior in high school, an older guy (maybe 25?) tried to strike up a friendship with me. He told me he was writing an article for a magazine about "modern youth" and wanted to interview me. I could tell something wasn't quite right when he went through all his questions and after half an hour told me that his girlfriend had suggested the question "Have you ever had sexual feelings toward other boys?" Turns out that he had recruited a friend of mine, and that's how he got my name. There was no girlfriend. BSA will do whatever it takes to keep people that might "recruit" a young man out of the program. Is that right wing whacko? Maybe so, and if so, sign me up.

written by CBM , February 27, 2008 Protecting the boys is so much more than excluding homosexuals. There is a background check done on every adult leader (male AND female). YES, the BSA has female Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Den leaders and other roles. One can be "straight" and still "like" young boys As for this all being "old news", try looking up what is going on in PA. The battle started 4-5 years ago, and is still raging. Meanwhile, the boys, not adults, miss out. Write comment
