A great victory was won for unborn babies this week. Bobby Cutts, Jr., a former In coming to the verdict, the jury rejected Cutts’s claim that he accidentally killed Jessie. This claim of “accidental” death rings even hollower with respect to the unborn baby. Let’s say, just for argument’s sake, that the death of Jessie was a bit accidental. Maybe Cutts swung out at her in anger, but didn’t mean to kill her. Once he saw that Jessie was dead, he still had time to save the baby. He should have at least tried to get that baby out before it died, slowly, in her mother’s uterus. But Cutts would not have considered trying to save his baby’s life if the prosecutor’s theory is true (as the jury found). To the contrary, the prosecutor argued that Cutts deliberately killed Jessie because he did not want his daughter to be born. He did not want to pay child support for a fourth child. Much easier to just kill the baby. Oh, and the mother, too, if she is in the way. What a great irony. In our legal system, Jessie could have decided that she did not want the baby that she had conceived with Cutts. She could have legally killed that little girl, even after the baby was viable. Indeed, she could have done so even if Cutts wanted to take responsibility for his daughter off of Jessie’s hands. However, Cutts can’t make similar decisions once his baby has been conceived. If he decides that he does not want to be a father and takes action to kill the baby, then our legal system considers him a murderer. What a disconnect when the laws allow the mother, but not the father, to kill a baby. Why is one decision considered gruesome and despicable, even as the other decision is considered a woman’s prerogative? Such a dichotomy is wrong. Cutts was appropriately found guilty of aggravated murder. Mothers who choose to kill their babies are no different. Every adult has the right to decide if they want to be a parent, but the decision comes before conception, not after. For those who want to play the “rape and incest” or “danger to the mother” cards at this juncture . . . At a minimum, those situations should be discussed separately from the rest of abortion law. Abortion should not be allowed in all instances in order to cater to self-defense needs that might exist for the mother in certain rare circumstances. Jessie’s baby surely received justice this week. Her murderer has been convicted and may even get the death penalty. It’s an important step in the right direction. Sadly, millions of other unborn babies have as yet to receive similar justice from our legal system.

written by Byron George , February 15, 2008 Great article Tara, Hang on, you are about to be blasted by the pro-kill (I mean pro-choice) crowd.

written by Old Red , February 15, 2008 The rape and incest "card" can hardly be discussed separately from the rest of abortion. They are central to it. If all fetuses are persons then those whose fathers are rapists or related to them are included. Anything less destroys the whole "unborn child" argument.

written by Byron George , February 15, 2008 Ok Red, Lets kill the rapist or the person who committed incest and let the baby live.

written by Old Red , February 15, 2008 That will be of great comfort to a pregnant 12 year old, I am sure.

written by Brown Bess , February 16, 2008 I really wish people who cared so much for fetuses would show the same amount of concern once the children were born. Like you know, health insurance for kids so they don't die premature deaths, not poisoning them with chemicals in everything from their food to their toys to their air, etc. But all of that intensity in being "pro-life" somehow evaporates when the kid is out of the womb. Especially if that kid isn't white and well-born.

written by Byron George , February 16, 2008 So Bess, You are saying it is ok to kill babies because they may not have health insurance. My son died at the 1 year of age. We had healthcare insurance, had good doctors but still passed on. Your debate that a child should be killed is amazing. What about folks who get into their 70's and 80's. When they finally have to be put in a nursing facility should we just put them to death. You pro-death folks amaze me with your arguments.

written by Angela Wittman , February 16, 2008 Just a comment to say thank you to Tara for bringing this to our attention and to inform the readers that several states are working toward establishing the personhood of the preborn: AL, CO, GA, MT, SC, VA. You can read more about it at Right to Life Act of SC.net. Also, US Senate candidate Larry Kilgore is calling for a Personhood Amendment to the Texas Constitution... Can y'all say victory and justice for the pre-born babies? I can. : )

written by Old Red , February 16, 2008 Earth to jj: Pregnant 12-year-olds are by definition rape victims. Should their victimization include unwanted motherhood as well?

written by Grrr , February 17, 2008 We will never move forward as a nation if we are still having arguments that are so 1984.

written by Albert J. Garry , February 17, 2008 Hello Tara and gang. Thanks for the article. I'm in the child care industry and recently joined the efforts of the Dallas KinCare Network to try to add additional support to Grandparents and other relatives raising children. My interest in this article is because I see children's lives get destroyed by things adults do to them...and then the children get blamed for making wrong decisions. I'm also surrounded by parents with children born with illnesses as in the case with George. Like George, my son was born with an illness and had heart surgery at 5 months old and after another heart surgery he is still with us (luckily). While in the hospital there was another 5 month old infant in need of a new heart. Now there are thousands of grandparents and relatives needing help to raise their grandchildren because the parents are not able to. I can not change what Bobby Cutts did. I really can't explain why some babies are born with defects. One thing I do know for a fact from seeing it myself, is that all people are the same from a physical view point. From my many years of working in the medical industry, each person that came into the emergency room all had the same number of organs and body parts accompanied with red blood. Pain is universal and goes across every country from adults to teenagers to infants. I'm pro-education and I believe that if we can channel all the anger and finger pointing energy toward someone, I'll recommend picking on the grandparents and other relatives raising children in Dallas, Texas. The only catch is that you must be so angry that you are willing to do something besides "saying you're angry." Make a donation to the Dallas KinCare Network earmarked to help with child care and after school support. All children are born with pure hearts. After years and years of just finger pointing children sometimes turn into Bobby Cutts and then people try to explain what happened and why. It's too late then. Again...stay angry and make a donation to the Dallas KinCare Network or find another way to help.

written by alamomom , February 18, 2008 Speaking from personal experience in a pregnant adolescent situation, there are always other options rather than abortion of the innocent child. There is always adoption. There are so many childless couples who long to adopt. Granted, being pregnant at a very young age is a hard road to choose, but it is the right one. Write comment
