U.S. Mint Gives Sneak Peek of 2008 Dollar Coins PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Thu, Dec 27, 2007, 11:52 PM

$1 Coin.jpgThe U.S. Mint on Thursday offered the first glimpse of four presidential $1 coins it plans to issue in 2008. The coins bear the images of the fifth through eighth United States presidents. Ed Moy, the U.S. Mint director, hopes people will spend the coins not just collect them.

The USA Today reports that “beginning Feb. 14, the Mint will issue a new dollar every three months. James Monroe will be first, followed by John Quincy Adams on May 15, Andrew Jackson on Aug. 14, and Martin Van Buren on Nov. 13.”

The Mint anticipates demand of more than 400 million presidential coins, compared with the more than 800 million presidential coins ordered by the Federal Reserve and put into circulation in 2007. Those first four dollar coins were engraved by the images of George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Washington coin was the most popular, with more than 300 million issued.

It's wishful thinking on the government's part to think the $1 coins will go into wide usage, unless the $1 bill is eliminated. What should be done is elimination of the $1 bill in favor of the $2 bill. Cash registers have been made with a $1 coin slot since the Anthony dollars were released years ago, and no additional bill slot would be needed. Vending machines would also need to be updated to accept $1 coins and $2 bills (which has already been done in many cases).

Considering the life span of a coin is 20 years, vs. 18 months for paper currency, this would be a huge cost savings.

Once this is done, we can start talking about eliminating pennies, which cost more than 1 cent to make.

How about putting "In God We Trust" back on the front? Who's idea was it to remove it from the face of the coin? BAD decision.
