The Texas Association of Business held a news conference Wednesday announcing the formation of the Texas Institute for a Competitive Workforce, a program designed to promote higher standards in Texas Public Schools.
TAB President Bill Hammond told reporters he's been meeting with presidents of local chambers of commerce and the heads of their education committees encouraging him to become "critical friends" of the public schools in their regions. He said chambers of commerce should participate in "Adopt a School" and other programs to assist the education community but also need to involve themselves more directly in holding the local school boards and superintendents accountable for the results. Hammond called for more frank accounting of the dire nature of the state's dropout problem. "It is absolutely imperative that we be honest about the dropout rate in Texas," Hammond said. "State leaders cannot fix our failing system until our school's shortcomings are completely disclosed." Hammond also called for tougher measures to crack down on cheating on the state's standardized test, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). He also said that no school should receive an acceptable rating unless at least 60 percent of its students pass the test at all subject levels.
