Democrat Takes GOP House Seat in FW Special Election PDF Print E-mail

Fort Worth Democrat Dan Barrett has defeated Republican Mark Shelton on Tuesday in the runoff to replace Republican state Rep. Anna Mowery in the Texas House.  Barrett defeated Shelton, 52 percent to 48 percent, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Tarrant County Elections Office. Barrett received 5,365 votes to Shelton’s 4,913.  District 97 includes southwest Fort Worth, Benbroook, and Edgecliff Village.

Shelton, a doctor who won a surprise second place victory in last month's special election made immigration his primary issue while Democrat Barrett made House Speaker Tom Craddick is primary issue.  Shelton publicly pledged his support to the Speaker and Craddick had helped raise funds for Shelton.  Barrett claimed that the Texas House was under a "dictatorship" and that Craddick's would only be replaced with the election of Democrats.

The district has been staunchly Republican and had been represented by Republican Anna Mowery, a staunch Craddick backer, for 19 years.

This is good stuff. To win in staunchly Republican districts, all Democrats really need to do is make House Speaker Tom Craddick "the issue."

Congratulations to Dan Barrett on his win!!

Congratulations to Dan Barrett! This is really a big, amazing win.

When will the Texas Republican Party get it that the longer they cram Tom Craddick down the throats of Texans the more the voters will throw up on their (the TRP) shoes.

Yes please do not forget Joel Burns victory in the "non partisan" Council race. Ft Worth's 1st gay official. Byron George must be sobbing in a corner of his room at this very moment.

Oh. Dear. God. Do the Republicans really know how bad it is for them? Although gloating is not nice, as a stauch liberal Democrat, I can't be more over joyed. This is, NO DOUBT, a result of the Rebublicans performance in connection to having the worst president ever.

Dan talked about school vouchers a lot, If you were paying attention on Nov7th, you would have noticed that Utah voters voted down school vouchers, by a significant margin, keep in mind Utah has a Republican Governor and a Republican majority in their House, Every school voucher candidate had his/her eyes on that, Have you noticed that little has been heard from Leninger since then, Hell our magpie Harper-Brown has even been pretty quiet about it.
