Here is that pertinent part of Dreher’s column: "The campaign's purest Huckenfreudian moment so far came on Sunday's Meet the Press, when Mitt Romney protested Mr. Huckabee's calling President Bush's foreign policy ‘arrogant.’ ‘That's an insult to the president, and Mike Huckabee should apologize to the president,’ Mr. Romney whined. Or what? He's going to take away the Huck's GOP pledge pin? Mr. Romney's unctuous response brought to mind Doug Neidermeyer, the Animal House brown-noser vexed by the Delta House rabble." Dreher goes on to say that the Republican Establishment is in a panic that a social conservative/economic populist like Mike Huckabee actually has a chance to win the Republican nomination in 208. Even if Huckabee loses, Rod Dreher points out that "his legacy will define conservative politics for the next political era.” Rod, don’t leave Ron Paul out. He, too, is influencing the future of the conservative movement by his 2008 presidential campaign. The question remains: Can conservatives put back together the winning coalition of social and economic conservatives that propelled Ronald Reagan to the White House in 1980? In their respective campaigns, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul represent two key factions which were part of that majority coalition. written by RLS , December 18, 2007 Good to see one of my favorite conservatives recognizing the twisted genius of our good friend Mr. Dreher.

written by RelicMM , December 19, 2007 Great article, Tom, and thanks for the link. The prescience of George Orwell could well apply to the malaise perpetrated by neocons. Let's not malign Al Capp's hillbillys. Many cultural and religious conservatives have long been fed up being used as unintentional shills to hide skullduggery. Maybe there is light at the end of ROd's tunnel. after all.

written by Right Wing Republican Volunteer , December 19, 2007 Romney is only my third or fourth choice, but this treatment is extremely unfair. There were many conservative Republicans who were very upset with Huckabee's slamming our Republican President (using Harry Reid's and other left-wingers' words) and, no Tom, they were not all neo-cons. The fact is that if you look at their records as governor, it is Romney and not Huckabee who was the more conservative: it was Huckabee, not Romney, who pumped up taxes and spending; it was Huckabee, not Romney, who set all time records for pardoning murderers and rapists and other convicted criminals; it was Huckabee, not Romney, who tried to turn his state into a safe haven for illegals (to help out the same chicken guys who were Clinton's big backers); it was Huckabee, not Romney, who ordered the physical destruction of dozens of Ark govt computer hard drives to hide what really went on during his governorship; it is Phylis Schlafly and the head of Ark Eagle Forum, not the neo-cons, who both describe Huckabee as a liberal who cannot be trusted. To describe Huckabee as a Reagan conservative borders on the absurd.

written by Grr , December 20, 2007 It must be horrible to be a Rebulican these days: no vision, worst president ever, no good presidential candidates, Iraq, etc. I almost feel sorry for you guys, but I have a solution for you: kick the evangelicals to the curb & reclaim fiscal conservatism. You better hope to God that the economy doesn't tank over the summer. Because of this president, your party will be forever changed (hopefully to a condition were I can rejoin). Write comment

I knew there was something that bothered me about Mitt Romney. Rod Dreher put his finger on it when he likened Romney to the character Neidermeyer in the film Animal House.
