Catholic Groups To Boycott Philip Pullman Film PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Nov 28, 2007, 12:55 PM

God.jpgRoman Catholic groups in North America are calling for a boycott of the forthcoming film adaptation of the first in Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy, claiming that it is bait to ensnare children in his “atheist agenda.” Bill Donohue, the president of the Catholic League in the United States, has said that the British author’s ‘His Dark Materials’ books are fiercely anti-Christian and promote “atheism for kids.”

The Daily Telegraph of London reports that “he said he feared the film would prompt parents to buy the books, unaware that the third in the series, The Amber Spyglass, climaxes in an epic battle to “destroy God.”

The Catholic League’s call for a boycott of ‘The Golden Compass,’ starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, has been taken up by a growing number of Catholic leaders.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia joined the boycott movement with a spokesman saying the film had “anti-religious themes” and Pullman was an “avowed atheist and has said in interviews that his books are about killing God.”

Nonetheless, the Catholic League might bring unintended consequences by drawing interest to the movie. The organization called for a boycott of the film adaptation of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ but it became one of the highest-grossing movies of 2006, even though film critics gave it terrible reviews.

I've asked before and I'll ask again. Why are atheist afraid of a God that they don't believe exists?
Why should they waste their time and money in court fighting against a God they say doesn't exist?

The Catholic League of the United States is Catholic only because Bill Donohue says it is. To this lifelong observant Catholic it has no more connection with the Church than the Golden Buddha Restaurant has with Budhism.
