The logical side of me says always predict the Mustangs to lose, while the Pony-faithful side of me calls for hope.
It might now be safe to say that all hope is lost.
Or perhaps that was long, long ago.
All I wanted was for SMU (1-10, 0-7 in C-USA) to get a victory for the final home game of the season. I knew it was a long shot going up against the University of Central Florida. The Golden Knights (8-3, 6-1) have actually proven they can win on the gridiron. We are still waiting on that from the Ponies. They fell to UCF 49-20. Way to represent Peruna with some homeland pride, Mustangs.
We had more first downs, comparable yardage, less penalties and more time of possession. And we still lost. Should we blame the four turnovers, three of which were interceptions by the men at the helm? But all the fault can’t be attributed to Justin Willis and Zach Rhodes. Heck, Rhodes actually threw a touchdown. The team has to take this one all as one. I can’t even give all the credit for the loss to the useless Phil Bennett. It’s time for the Mustangs to step up and step into a new role—one that actually exudes leadership.
Yes, the Golden Knights are one of the better teams in the conference, but is that really any reason why we shouldn’t win? Yes, the Ponies have been horrendous this year, but how far does it have to go? At some point, wouldn’t you want to start winning? Why wait until next season? Show some gusto, for crying out loud! Win a game!
I am not even going to give SMU the excuse of Kevin Smith on this one. He’s rushed all over most teams, and he took it to the Ponies at Gerald Ford Stadium, carrying the ball for 177 yards and two touchdowns. But this was our ninth straight loss. We haven’t seen a good-looking scoreboard final in almost two-and-a-half months. And, let’s face it, a scoreboard with a 45-31 victory over North Texas really isn’t the prettiest thing to see, anyway. Where’s the pride? Where’s the passion?
I think it’s safe to say that SMU’s season is dead. We have one game left at Memphis next week, and I cannot say with complete honesty that I have a positive outlook going into it. In fact, I am almost predicting disaster. Maybe if I approach it with a negative attitude, the opposite will happen, and the Ponies will actually win one. After all, we haven’t won anything on the road yet this year. Uh oh. There I go with hope again.
