Cannaday Gets Big Boost with Police Endorsements PDF Print E-mail
by Tom Pauken    Wed, Nov 14, 2007, 01:21 PM

lowell cannaday.jpgRepublican candidate for Sheriff Lowell Cannaday got a major boost in his bid to unseat Sheriff Lupe Valdez with the endorsement of major police associations in Dallas County. Cannaday received the support of the Dallas Police Association, the Irving Police Association, the Irving Fraternal Order of Police, the Grand Prairie Police Association, and the Wylie Police Association.

In making his endorsement of Cannaday, DPA President Glenn White stated:

“For too long, too many problems have gone unanswered at the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. The current Sheriff has had nearly three years to deliver us solutions, yet all we get are excuses. We have had the pleasure of serving with Chief Cannaday, and we know from experience that he will deliver what the current Sheriff has not – a Department that works with us to keep the people of Dallas safe.”

Democrat Lupe Valdez is the first openly lesbian sheriff of a major metropolitan county in the state of Texas. Her tenure in office has been wracked by controversy over her spending and hiring practices along with her management of the office.

Even though Dallas County increasingly has moved into the Democratic camp in recent elections, this is one election in which the Republicans expect to be competitive next year in Dallas County.

Lowell Cannaday is a former Dallas police officer and retired chief of the Irving police department. Yesterday’s endorsement by leading police organizations in Dallas County should help Lowell Cannaday in his bid to win the Republican nomination for Sheriff next March. The other Republican candidates in that race are Charles Richmond and Catherine Smit.

Are you kidding? Cannaday is already 70 years old! I'm no fan of the incumbent, but I think this guy is way too long in the tooth for this job.

Looks like another easy win for Lupe in 2008.

Toby Shook had all of these endorsements last fall and even he couldn't take down the Democratic machine.

Your "Democratic machine" had a decrease of voters over 2002. It has nothing to do with it; it's a matter of whether the R voters will come back.

And, Mike, we'll see how you feel when you're 70 and still vital.

xyz,

How do you know he's still "vital"? And why should we run the risk that he's too old to handle the job?

There are other candidates we should consider for this position.

When the truth gets out countywide about how Cannady wouldn't support the Irving efforts to combat illegal immigration, the GOP primary voters are going to eat him alive.

However, he looks very good at his age, making him the Mitt Romney-like politician of Dallas County.

I'm backing Charlie Richmond in the GOP primary, because I know he'll fight against problems associated with illegal aliens.

Wracked with controversy? By that do you mean lied about and insulted every other day in the Dallas Morning news? The Sheriff has done a great job!

Normally, I don't like to make comments, but this time I can't help myself. To the person who is called 'Yours Truly' - Your name implies that you are Sheriff Lupe Valdez. If so, I suggest that you show some humility because it will help you in the campaign.

Actually according to the US latest census numbers, over 150,000 anglos left Dallas County in the last 5 years, most were Republicans who moved to Collin and Denton counties. Its really over for the republicans and their anti-immigrant,anti-hispanic policies are driving all hispanics to the Democratic party.Over 1300 new latino voters registered to vote and voted in that cities recent election .Over 10,000 hispanics are now registered to vote in Irving and its school district is 67% hispanic, what do you belive those students will vote for when they turn 18 ?The Republican party needs to be totally wiped out of Dallas county and then Texas,it let its hatemongers take over, and destroy its moral values.

The Dallas County Jails are a disgrace and have been placed under Federal oversight. Sheriff Valdez cannot seem to manage her own people or her own budget well - morale is at an all time low. If Valdez expects to run on her own record she'll have to defend it - voters can plainly see that that IS the problem. Valdez, in spite of being an incumbent, already has two opponents from her own party who have announced they are running against her and will likely see more opposition for good reason.

Chief Cannaday's professional record of service speaks for itself. Chief Cannaday was a terrific respected leader at Dallas PD, and he was also a terrific Chief of Police for Irving. Moreover, as an elected member of Irving's City Council, Chief Cannaday brings additional experience having served local government, too. And, as a member of the armed forces, he deserves our respect. Dallas County would be well served to have the qualified experience and leadership of Chief Cannaday as our Sheriff. It's high time we get MORE candidates with the knowledge and qualifications of a Chief Cannaday who'll run for office willing to serve.

Semper Fi!

Im delighted that anyone would think I was Sheriff Valdez, but unfortunately I am just an interested citizen. I think its funny that so many of you buy into this crap. If anyone can give me one statistic behind all of the lambasting, then there may be some legitimacy to the criticism. Until then, I agree with Real Texas' assessment that the new majority in Dallas County is a Democratic one that is simply fed up with the corruption and failed leadership that the Republicans have raped us with for almost 7 years.

For those of you that think that all the republican voters are gone, you have to remember the mayors race. Though a non-partisan race, Oakley was the Democratic Party's candidate, they openly endorsed him and he was seen with every big wig Democrat in town in his campaign ads. Leppert on the other hand was clearly the choice of conservatives and was supposrted by many Republicans, of course, the Republican Party didn not endorse in a non-partisan race because they have much more class. If you followed the race, you will note that Oakley got slammed. I wonder where all those Democrats were then? Republicans simply did not vote in this race out of anger toward Bush, who is non going the direction that true Republicans want him to go, and other issues such as the war etc. This race, non-partisan or not, was a huge defeat for the Democrats.

Most criminal defense lawyers in Dallas, whether Democrat or Republican, know the Dallas jail is poorly run-cant account for prisoners, unhealthy with an almost complete disregard for the rights of the prisoners. Lupe Valdez wasnt qualified for the job when elected and it shows. Get somebody with enough experience to run the jail...no matter what party they're from.
