Pigeon Tsar Appointed in New York PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Nov 14, 2007, 11:30 AM

pigeon.jpgNew York City residents who feed pigeons could face fines up to $1,000 under a proposal to rid the city of the “flying pests.” City Councilperson Simcha Felder has proposed a ban on pigeon feeding in New York.

The Telegraph of London reports that “councilors have proposed the appointment of a Pigeon Tsar who would investigate how cities, including London, have dealt with the problem.”

Mayor Ken Livingstone of London has banned pigeon feeding in Trafalgar Square, closed down the official vendors, and has rented hawks to infiltrate and scare the lingering pigeons.” Unfortunately, that plan went awry when one of the hawks attacked a Chihuahua dog.

Los Angeles has resorted to the use of pigeon birth control, and officials in Basel, Switzerland have tried to fool pigeons by replacing their eggs with fake ones in the nests.

An average pigeon creates 25lbs. of droppings each year. Mayor Bloomberg has not yet endorsed the pigeon feeding ban but hinted that he will support the bill.
