The irrational rantings from Angela Hunt’s choir of true believers, who have almost taken over the comment section of the blogosphere, continues. Pro Hunt followers’ comments are reduced to name calling and shrill declarations of her sainthood while refusing to acknowledge the ugly facts about Ms. Hunt and the campaign she ran. As for my alleged involvement in the election, I was insulted that anybody would associate me with the pro toll road effort in the southern sector. I thought they were far too nice and non-aggressive for my taste. I have always approached politics as a blood sport. What the “Vote Yes” people were allowed to get away with in the Black community would never have happened had I been intimately involved with the ”Vote No” effort. It would be hypocritical of me to take any credit for the pro toll road forces’ victory especially when you consider my consistent, less then flattering portrayal of the ”powers that be” that backed the toll road. I may not be a nice guy but in this case I am brutally honest. Angela Hunt’s cult of personality won’t allow her true believers to look at the facts. First off, I consistently raised a populist theme by criticizing the broken promises from the white business elite that were supporting the toll road. But since my columns never attempted to deify Ms. Hunt but instead chose to analyze her objectively, I was accused of being a pro toll road supporter. Secondly, Angela Hunt ran a negative, misleading, and dishonest campaign in the Black community that left many in the Black community angry. For instance, it was Ms. Hunt’s campaign that sabotaged “Vote No” campaign signs to read “Pave The Trinity” instead of “Save The Trinity”. It was Ms. Hunt’s campaign that lied to Black voters when her campaign workers told Black voters that they would have to pay a toll just to get out of Oak Cliff if the toll road issue passed. It was Ms. Hunt’s operation that sent out a campaign flier claiming that the toll road was the reason southern sector Black economic development had not happened. It was City Councilwoman Angela Hunt who smugly sat back and allowed political theater producer, Roy Williams, to disrupt a City Council meeting while praising Ms. Hunt and her anti-toll road cause. Never did Angela Hunt denounce any of these activities. Yet, she still has starry-eyed followers who have pronounced her a populist politician with integrity. Ironically, many of Angela Hunt’s followers are the same who have religiously denounced similar antics by Mr. Williams over the years and once called Laura Miller a populist politician of the people. In my 30 plus years of covering politics, I have never seen a politicians with integrity allow the kinds of activities that Ms. Hunt allowed in her campaign. From the very beginning of this election, I have written that the Black electorate should be leery of supporting the toll road and less then enthusiastic about a park. One major player in the Black political establishment accurately characterized the dilemma this way, “The white folks with the toll road have promised us a lot and never done enough. But the white folks against the toll road have never done anything for us.” This might account for the fact that Angela Hunt never dealt with this issue until the very end of the campaign. I felt so strongly about this dilemma I coined the phrase “no development, no vote”. I believe the Black electorate and the Black political establishment took the message to heart thus accounting for the low voter turn-out in the Black community. Here are some interesting examples. Much was made about the entire Black political establishment being involved in the pro toll road effort. But upon closer inspection, it is clear that the entire group really did not show up and there was little or no political enforcement of their commitment. City Councilman Tennell Atkins told voters in his town hall meetings to vote their conscience while never strongly endorsing the measure. City Councilwoman Carolyn Davis was invisible doing the election which might account for her district being the only district in the Black electorate that the anti-toll road forces carried. City Councilwoman Vonciel Hill’s involvement in the election was the most mysterious. Ms. Hill was supposedly a supporter of the toll road. However, her campaign manager, Dorothy Dean, was a consultant with the anti-toll road group. And her closest political ally, Joyce Foreman, was a consultant and spokesperson for the anti-toll road folks in the southern sector. Some have questioned whether or not Ms. Hill was secretly working for Angela Hunt’s group. No matter, the pro toll road forces carried Ms. Hill’s district. The pro toll road forces even carried the very precincts that Ms. Dean, Ms. Hill, and Ms. Foreman claimed to control! Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway put 100% of his political effort into the “Vote No” cause. Commissioner John Wiley Price cut radio commercials but he was a non-factor in the race. After former City Councilman James Fantroy “outed” Price ally, Kathy Neely, as a federal snitch in the City Hall corruption probe, Mr. Price’s political group has been in tatters. Over 20 years ago, I was the only journalist in town to take on the John Price political machine when he was one of the most powerful Black politicians in the country. Legendary Black newspaper publisher Bill Blair and I watched as Price followers burned our papers in front of the office. We listened as we were being vilified on black radio stations because we dared to tell the truth about Mr. Price. Several years later I was the first journalist to question the cult of personality that surrounded Mayor Laura Miller. At the time, nobody in the white media would utter a negative word about Ms. Miller. I was also vilified by Miller followers. Now I am watching with amused interest at the cult of personality surrounding Angela Hunt. Interestingly, many of the same folks that got burned for blindly following Laura Miler have now taken up the crusade for Angela Hunt. Ms. Hunt, now considered by some as

written by Nathan , November 12, 2007 Rufus, who said that anybody would have to pay a toll to leave Oakcliff? You say you approach "politics as a bloodsport" but Angela was to mean this time around and hurt your feelings? Trinity Vote may have spouted some hyperbole about Mayor Miller and southern Dallas development, but the Mayor and several councilmembers flat out lied on several occasions. I suppose you missed all of this because often your postings here at Dallas blog are little more than a gossip column of who said what 'south of the Trinity' rather than an exploration of fact.

written by S Ebirt , November 12, 2007 Anyone like Shaw who does not recognize the need to recuse oneself from reporting/commenting on one's own wife obviously has a flawed moral compass. Such actions are unprofessional and the occasional mention of that relationship at the tail of his columns does nothing to mitigate the inappropriateness of such.

written by Roger Herrera , November 12, 2007 Dallas needs more advocates like Angela Hunt who do not always carry the rich and powerfuls water. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a lot of money, but when the rich and powerful control the entire show, that's not the kind of city I wish to call home.

written by joseph raines , November 12, 2007 Good try, Mr. Shaw. It is apparent to me (and probably others who read your blog) that you are biased unfavorably against Angela Hunt and favorably towards Leppert and Black ministers, Willis Johnson, and Dwaine Caraway. This diatribe against Angela Hunt and those of us who are "true believers" is uncalled for. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, you give the so-called Black leaders and the Mayor a pass -- why aren't you investigating and questioning Leppert's motives (or the actions of the Vote No group)? Do I hear crickets?

written by East Dallas Eccentric , November 12, 2007 I'm in a bit of disbelief about your column. You cannot get past race, I have now accepted that you never will. But you should look at the people who voted "For", led by Angela Hunt. These are mostly 'white folks' who did not run to Frico and still support our schools and other institutions. They do a lot of volunteer work and have saved entire sections of town. These are not people directing others from their North Dallas home library. These are people who actually believe in DIVERSITY and folks of all colors getting along...

written by Politico , November 13, 2007 Uh, who cares what happens in the black neighborhoods. You folks don't live in the city and don't vote anyway. Glad some preacher told his parishioners to vote no, too bad their too worried about the sub-prime loan on their house in Lancaster. Walk the halls of Madison, Kimball, or SOC, the blacks are leaving in a hurry.

written by Jonathan Green , November 13, 2007 Rufus, you have been the only columnists in this this city to attack the populist and attack them with aggression not backing down to fear of retaliation, insults, or accepting tokeism under the table. That says alot about your character and what you put to heart. I have read the haters comments referencing you to many things, but none have presented anything factual to support you being a sell out. In fact, all I have read about your journalistic style is anger expressed by the opposition for not supporting their cause. I have read intellectual attacks by the Price group because you expose him and his followers with factual truths; taking republicans money then talking out the side of the mouth with glaring promises of "being our man downtown". I am firm believer that "to know any man one must go back to his day of birth", therefore, none of the populist know who Rufus Shaw is, what Rufus Shaw represent, and what Rufus Shaw is committed too. I can say this in closing, I have personally encountered a bouffant of supporters that read your blog and look forward to it every week. In addition, although they choose to remain silent with their comments they are endorsing what you present as real!

written by Eve , November 14, 2007 How can you say no one in the white media would say anything negative about Laura Miller? Get real. The Dallas News hated her. They softened only after she won and appointed a Belo family member to a downtown planning council.

written by J Smithe , November 14, 2007 Rufus, normally I agree with many things you say. However for the first time I find your disregard of Angela such a shock that it tints my view of you. I actually found you to be quite rational and unbiased about many things, but this - Wow! If you want to take on someone who needs to be examined - take on District 3's new councilman Neumann. Now there's someone who is worthy of your attention. Lord there's so much there to work with I wonder why yesterday's and today's blog are the first I've read about him written.

written by Richie Sheridan , November 19, 2007 "In my 30 plus years of covering politics, I have never seen a politicians with integrity allow the kinds of activities that Ms. Hunt allowed in her campaign." Angela's faults were a mole hill compared to Leppert and Cos. mountain of lies. The election was stolen with LIES AND MONEY, PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

written by Jason K , November 21, 2007 Hey Rufus, perhaps you should try to setup a meeting to talk with Angela Hunt to voice your concerns and get her side of the story. Maybe you'd change your mind about her, or maybe you wouldn't. But it would probably be an eye opening experience either way. Also, I think people backed Angela Hunt because they believe she is anti-establishment and fights for people as opposed as fighting for business. They feel she gives them a voice that others do not. Laura Miller was that voice until she essentially turned out to be more of the same after she became mayor. Come to think of it, it's a shame people feel they need a voice on the council that speaks for the "common" person, since that's what a city council rep should be anyway.

written by BR Betzen , November 22, 2007 Mr. Shaw, While we have often attended the same community meetings, this is the first time I have been exposed to this side of you. Your view of the Toll Road Vote is a surprise. I am the guy who started the Trinity River Vote Clarification project involving discarded Vote NO signs placed illegally on public property. Just google the words Trinity River and Vote and the first hit is my web site. All of this is outlined there in public. I helped start the recycle project with the simple change of the 's' to a 'p' so the signs read “Pave the Trinity.” Tell any group of 10 people about the issue that we voted on regarding the toll road being placed parallel to the Trinity River, in the same flood way, for over 7 miles. Then show that same group the “VOTE NO, Save the Trinity.” Ask them the question: “What side of the issue you would be voting on if you voted NO as the sign suggests, voting for or against the toll road?” The large majority would state that you would be voting against the toll road. Change that sign to say “VOTE NO, Pave the Trinity.” Ask the same question. Would more people answer the question correctly? Absolutely! Were politicians attempting to confuse people? Absolutely! Who would be mad about the correction of the signs? Any politician attempting to confuse the voting public. Are you one of those? Apparently. Angela Hunt had NOTHING to do with the Trinity River Vote Clarification Project or the correction of Vote NO signs. That was only my doing after the YES signs I had posted were stolen and replaced with Vote NO signs. That led me to ultimately help start the signs correction project. On 10-22-07 the following was posted at http://www.studentmotivation.o...nProject/: “It is possible that Angela Hunt and others, if they find out what is being done, may not approve. It is work that must still continue. If anyone wants to continue this clarification work using discarded signs, here are instructions that have been shared with me:” Mr. Shaw, the elimination of the toll road from the Trinity River park is an issue that is much bigger than Angela Hunt. I respect her and thank her for her wonderful leadership, but this is much bigger than Angela Hunt. It means the difference between a quiet world-class park in the center of a less traffic-congested city, a city with through-traffic routed around the city as it should be versus a city that continues to allow through-traffic to come through the center of the city with no intention of stopping any longer than it takes to leave fumes as they drive through. Why do we have traffic loops around our city? Is that not to redirect through-traffic around the center? Instead we were planning to build a toll road through our center to serve that 80% of traffic that is only driving through our city. By trying to focus on Angela Hunt are you wanting to avoid the real engineering and traffic control issues? Or the issue that if “Pave the Trinity” could have been on every VOTE NO sign that the toll road would have lost by a landslide?

written by Richie Sheridan , November 24, 2007 We can still have a world class Trinity River Park with a unique world class tunnel. State Rep Raphael Anchia, and others are very much interested in this approach. With such a tunnel we can have Central Park and San Antonio venues, which can only happen when sections of the park don't flood. Right now, no valuable structures can be built between the levees because of flooding. Isn't it telling that the Powers To Be in Dallas will build a 9 mile long mini-levee to protect the tollway from flooding, but won't do anything to protect any part of the park from flooding? Richie Sheridan p.s. Mr. Betzen is one brave man! Write comment
