DMN Was Convinced TrinityVote Would Win PDF Print E-mail
by Sam Merten    Thu, Nov 8, 2007, 04:31 PM

In today’s “Ask the Editor” from The Dallas Morning News, editorial page editor Keven Ann Willey explains how election night unfolded for the team of people working Tuesday night.

“We had an editorial written and edited about how now that the voters had spoken and they didn’t want the tollway inside the Trinity River levees, that it was time for community leaders to get on board with that sentiment and find a workable alternative route,” Willey wrote. “We specifically called on referendum victor Angela Hunt to stay engaged in the project and help craft an alternative to the plan she’d essentially gotten voters to deep-six. The headline was ‘Now, the Road Ahead.’”

She then explained that they didn’t begin to rewrite the story to reflect the change until close to 9 p.m., despite Vote No! leading from start to finish.

The election was well in hand for Vote No! at 9 p.m. The DMN must not have had much confidence in its message.

“But forgive us if we aren’t out honking horns and dancing on tables,” Willey wrote. “We’re still scratching our heads over that Trinity vote.”

Sam, Why didn't we see any polls before the debate?

But the interesting thing is how she phrases it. "OUR"

If they were an honest broker instead of shills, they would simply report the news not take ownership of one side or the other.

I noticed how they mentioned all the times they editorialized for recorded votes a the legislature. 80 times over 4 and a half years they say. I think they were trying to distract us from the fact that editorialized so much about the toll road in the last few months.

Ms. Bartos, I noticed the pronouns used as well -- the Dallas Managed News takes editorial stances to a whole new level -- unbelievable!

They're editorial writers. Editorial writers don't report the news. They take sides. That's pretty much the definition of editorial writers.

That editorial view was supported by the news side however. Information was withheld and positioned in a way that supported the business community. Never have i seen such a concerted effort to convince the voters the sky was red and not blue, except when they rammed George W. Bush down our throats for governor because that was needed for him to be president. I suspect the tollway will turn out just as well in the long run.
