Two teams were penalized before Saturday’s Busch race for attempting to alter the car’s lug nuts.
The No. 24 car, driven by Casey Mears, and the No. 88 car, driven by Brad Keselowski, were sent to the rear of the field at the start of the race for issues with the car’s lug nuts.
“We had some lug nuts that had a thread turned out of them, just trying to make it stops faster,” said Tony Eury, Sr., crew chief of the No. 88 car. “We’ve got a Busch crew here against all these Cup crews, it’s hard to compete against them.”
A race official said NASCAR anticipates further penalties to be handed out later next week.
The No. 88 car is owned by JR Motorsports, the company founded and owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
The No. 24 is owned by Hendrick Motorsports, the team Earnhardt will drive for next year.
Hendricks’ No. 5 team, along with the Nos. 24 and 88 will all be run out of the JR Motorsports’ complex next season, and the No. 88 team began using Hendrick engines after Earnhardt announced his intention to drive for the team earlier this season.
NASCAR said there were no issues with Hendrick’s No. 5 car, driven by Kyle Busch.
