Here is part of what Yepsen has to say about Huckabee’s rise in the polls in an article entitled “Positive Reagan-like spirit spurs Huckabee’s rise”: “Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's been the hot candidate in the Republican race since he finished second in the Iowa GOP's straw poll back in August … In recent days, that talk has escalated to a new level of buzz: Huckabee's doing so well in Iowa, he just might be able to win the Iowa Republican caucuses.” Huckabee increasingly is tapping into the populist, middle class base of the Republican party which fueled Barry Goldwater’s and Ronald Reagan’s campaigns for President. While Mike Huckabee may not have the financial backing enjoyed by the major Republican contenders, his message is resonating with disenchanted conservatives looking for an alternative to the current favorites.
