Huckabee on the Rise in Iowa PDF Print E-mail
by Tom Pauken    Tue, Oct 30, 2007, 01:14 PM

huckabee.jpgDavid Yepsen, the most prominent political reporter in Iowa, has a column in today’s Des Moines Register highlighting the increased support former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is garnering in Iowa which will hold its presidential caucus in January 2008.

Here is part of what Yepsen has to say about Huckabee’s rise in the polls in an article entitled “Positive Reagan-like spirit spurs Huckabee’s rise”:

“Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's been the hot candidate in the Republican race since he finished second in the Iowa GOP's straw poll back in August … In recent days, that talk has escalated to a new level of buzz: Huckabee's doing so well in Iowa, he just might be able to win the Iowa Republican caucuses.”

Huckabee increasingly is tapping into the populist, middle class base of the Republican party which fueled Barry Goldwater’s and Ronald Reagan’s campaigns for President. While Mike Huckabee may not have the financial backing enjoyed by the major Republican contenders, his message is resonating with disenchanted conservatives looking for an alternative to the current favorites.

Were Mike Huckabee to upset Mitt Romney in Iowa, he might be able to do as a Republican in 2008 what Jimmy Carter on the Democratic side in 1976 – use an Iowa victory to win the Democratic presidential nomination and the election that year.

Thanks, Tom, for an interesting and possibly encouraging analysis.

Huckaby should be given very strong VP consideration by Ron Paul after he gets the nomination.
