US border Patrol Expands Immigration Crackdown PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Oct 26, 2007, 02:20 PM

The U.S. Border Patrol plans to announce today a “zero tolerance” operation to prosecute, jail and deport all illegal immigrants caught in the Laredo-area, making a significant tightening of immigration enforcement along a key U.S. border corridor.

As reported by the Houston Chronicle, “this stepped-up effort is an expansion of the Border Patrol’s ‘Operation Streamline’ project in the Del Rio and Yuma, Ariz. sectors, which sharply reduced illegal entries. That is being introduced to the sprawling Laredo sector beginning Wednesday, officials confirmed.”

The public has expressed a wide range of opinions from strong support to serious doubts, because immigration cases will clog-up already overloaded federal courts.

When the same operation was tried in Del Rio, apprehensions dropped by 46 percent from October 2006 to August 2006 compared with the 2005-2006 fiscal year. Agency intelligence officials revealed that human traffickers have shifted operations downriver to Laredo.
