written by davidm , October 24, 2007 love the pumpkin.... the most artful spin of global warming and green issues has been the AFL-CIO leadership.. think it's brilliant that they have used the toxic nastiness in China to promote union workers as the green alternative with regulations and safety for the public first...that's good old-fashioned american marketing

written by HSH , October 24, 2007 Caroline, I suggest you read this past Sunday's cover story in the New York Times Magazine about the coming permanent drought conditions in the Southwest and the fight over water, once which we in Texas are already experiencing. Then consider that, as of today, over 1,000 homes in San Diego County have been destroyed by wildfires since Sunday. It has not rained in San Diego County in over 120 days. Global warming is real. It will prove to be the biggest challenge of our children's generation and their children's generation. We should stop ignoring it and start working in every way we can to address it. Al Gore may be scary to you, but to millions of young people he is a role model. They get it -- even if their parents don't.

written by John Shaw , October 24, 2007 So Bill is an expert on global warming, and concludes that Al Gore is a fraud, and is simply trying to scare us. Bill must subscribe to the George W. Bush philosophy of shutting up the scientists -- the very scientists that do their work because, you know, they know science, rather than draw cartoons. (No, Al Gore is not one of those scientists – but he is a knowledgeable narrator of their findings). Just this week, the Bush administration silenced the actual scientists again: Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a Senate panel yesterday that climate change “is anticipated to have a broad range of impacts on the health of Americans.” If that sounds a little vague and non-specific, there’s a good reason — the White House refused to let her say what she wanted to say. Testimony that the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention planned to give yesterday to a Senate committee about the impact of climate change on health was significantly edited by the White House, according to two sources familiar with the documents. Specific scientific references to potential health risks were removed after Julie L. Gerberding submitted a draft of her prepared remarks to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review. Instead, Gerberding’s prepared testimony before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee included few details on what effects climate change could have on the spread of disease. Only during questioning did the director of the government’s premier disease-monitoring agency describe any specific diseases likely to be affected, again without elaboration. A CDC official familiar with both versions told the AP that Gerberding’s draft “was eviscerated.” Among the deletions were “details on how many people might be adversely affected because of increased warming and the scientific basis for some of the CDC’s analysis on what kinds of diseases might be spread in a warmer climate and rising sea levels.”

written by John McClelland , October 24, 2007 The "global warming is fake" group really does believe in it but can't let on that they do. That oceanfront property they bought in Arizona will be real one day and they want the money for it! :)

written by Libby Shaw , October 24, 2007 I work with university students and let me tell you, they are very well informed about the reality of global warming and those from areas such as Atlanta and California are worried sick about it. They wonder why we older adults have been so blind, if not downright stupid, about this issue and ask why we have not taken a strong stand against Mr. 24% W. on it. These kids are very bright, well-educated and look forward to successful if not brilliant careers. Thank goodness they get it and see through the political nonsense. We older folks who should have known better have a lot to answer for.

written by Ian Perry , October 24, 2007 Global warming is an extremely over blown concern. Even if it is really caused primarily by human activity the main people to be harmed will be those in third world countries, who are also the primary ones who will be harmed by policies to fight global warming which raise the price of energy and thus fertilizers and thus food. We have heard the hysterical claims of worldwide flooding, but where is consideration for the starving third world citizens anti-industrial policies would generate?

written by Byron George , October 25, 2007 Here are some statistics and summaries from the National Weather Service to show you how rarely rainy weddings in San Diego occur. Month Precipitation (inches) Sunshine % January 1.80 71% February 1.53 73% March 1.77 70% April .79 66% May 0.19 58% June 0.07 57% July 0.02 68% August 0.10 70% September 0.24 70% October 0.37 68% November 1.45 74% December 1.57 72% The percentage of sunny days in San Diego is 73.75. No rainfall in 120 days does not sound much off the average. Check out this link: http://www.suntimes.com/news/otherviews/450392,CST-EDT-REF30b.article When AlGore starts practicing what he preaches, then I MIGHT take another look at global warming. While he flies around in his Lear when he could fly commercial, I have a hard time believing him. I wonder if he was with the crowd of the 70's protesting and screaming about the coming ice age.

written by John Shaw , October 25, 2007 So, Byron George, and others like you. You attack Al Gore, yet you do not deal with the fact that the Bush administration is silencing the scientists, as a group, that do know what they are talking about. The scientists observe the shrinking of habitats, the shrinking of the permafrost, the list goes on... And they want to sound the alarms. But this President, who I suspect you voted for, won't let the scientists speak their findings. You really are like the ostrich with its head buried. I find it hard to respect those who defend the silencing of the scientists...

written by lol , October 25, 2007 Libby, GWB is not at 24%; he's at 34% last I looked. You're mixed up with the rating for your Democrat congress. Oh boy, college students are convinced. Now, I wonder why that is? I remember in the 1950's we went for months without rain in West Texas. Many lakes ended up as big holes in the ground. Then, it stormed so much we had floods. Global warming then? If anyone wants, I can send a copy of a Newsweek article from 1975 forecasting a new Ice Age.

written by Ian Perry , October 25, 2007 Not all scientists believe that human activity is the main cause of global warming; some will point to the link between solar activity and the climate cycle, for example. In any case, if you show that global warming is in some degree human caused, you need to show that your solution won't create more problems than it solves.
...
written by John Shaw , October 25, 2007 Ian Perry, No, you don't need to show your solution. Identifying the problem does not require that one also knows the solution. We were able to diagnose cancer long before we could figure out how to treat it. But, as we got the diagnosis and cause right, we learned how to treat it over the course of time. So will we with global warming. But to pretend that it is not real is a foolish stance...
...
written by Ian Perry , October 25, 2007 If solar activity is a major cause, the quest for a solution may largely be futile. Of course more research is welcome to check out possibly correlations with green house gases; as responsible people we should certainly try to understand any unwelcome side effects of our actions, but attributing every storm or weather cycle to global warming seems unsound. Likewise it seems unsound to demand action (as most of the anthropocentric global warming advocates do) without showing that said action will not create more damage than it will prevent. We know very well that any variation in global temperatures will be within Earth's normal range, thus the burden is on the anthropocentric theory's proponents to show that the warming is primarily human caused. It is certainly not impossible that humans could cause significant change in the earth's climate, but given the fact the many other factors (whose role we don't yet fully understand) effect climate, and the fact that drastic government mandated reductions in greenhouse gases would be disasterious for the world's development, the soundest thing to do at this point is pretty clearly: nothing.
...
written by lol , October 25, 2007 So, John, it may not be man-made? If you don't know the solution, then you must admit the possibility. That's the controversy, whether or not it is man-made, therefore subject to another goofy liberal "solution," not that it exists.
...
written by Byron George , October 25, 2007 John, You watch too much CNN. Now just how can the president "silence" these scientist. Al Gore is a hypocrite. He flies around in his private Lear. Lives in a house that uses more electricity than 15 middle class homes then spouts rhetoric to sell his books and movie.
...
written by John Shaw , October 25, 2007 Byron, (et. al), As seems to be the case from others on "your side,” you don't answer the question. In a comment above, I quote the fact that the Bush administration edits the official testimony of its own scientists. In other words, they do not allow their own scientists to reveal the findings from their own scientific inquiry. This is, in my view, "silencing the scientists." Please explain the justification for this act. Is it right to tell the scientists what they cannot communicate about their scientific findings? For years, the tobacco companies paid for “scientific studies,” and all of this amounted to a massive lie upon the general public. Scientific inquiry communicated from an agenda is not genuine scientific inquiry. When Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is edited and silenced, this is not CNN, this is not Al Gore, this is not left wing messaging. This is an attempt to politicize science by the same group that is so expert at politicizing everything they seem to touch. We deserve to know the findings of our best scientists. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention needs to have the freedom to let us know, freely, loudly, and clearly, what the dangers to our health are. But I guess you know more about the science than this group of scientists. When will you be replacing Dr. Gerberding as the new head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?
...
written by Byron George , October 25, 2007 John, What about Dr. Michael Griffin? Would you consider him a good scientist? He disagrees wholeheartedly with global warming. Apart from his PhD in aerospace engineering, he holds five masters degrees, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the International Academy of Astronautics, he manages a US$1.1-billion climate-research budget and was unanimously confirmed to head NASA by the United States Senate.

written by Libby Shaw , October 25, 2007 I guess Reuter's poll of 10/17/07 is fake, LOL. W. is at 24%. You must be consulting the Fox Fake News Poll. As far as the approval rating for Congress is concerned, this is what happens when the vast majority of Republicans will vote with W. and against the American people over and over and over. And with regard to college kids, these kids likely have IQ's higher than the combination of all of those who trash proven scientific findings on global warming. The kids are also our future generation and thank God many of them are smarter than their parents.

written by t. kelley , October 26, 2007 Here's the reality: polar ice caps are melting, record temperatures are being experienced throught out the world, yet some of our in total denial that global warming is upon us. Are you stupid? What other proof do you need?
...
written by Byron George , October 26, 2007 So Libby, You think college kids that believe in global warming have higher IQ's than those that do not believe? Smarter than their parents? Do you have any data to back that up or did you get that from the left talking points? There are just as many or more scientist who believe global warming is a farce. Does that mean they have lower IQ's than those who believe? Finally, The President does not need to worry about his ratings in the polls. He is not eligible to run. But the Democratic majority will have to face their electors and explain why they haven't done one productive thing since they took over the majority. I thought they were going to immediately get us out of Iraq. What happened? BTW, I always enjoy debating with you because you do not call names as many posters do. Write comment
