Lynn Flint-Shaw New DART Chair PDF Print E-mail
by Rufus Shaw    Wed, Oct 24, 2007, 12:19 PM

Last night, the DART board elected Lynn Flint Shaw as the first African-American female to head the billion dollar, Dallas Area Rapid Transit Agency (DART).  DART is the largest transportation agency in North Texas.  Over 75 African-American business people and union leaders packed the DART board room in support of Ms. Shaw. Political consultant and radio personality, Willis Johnson, and diversity expert, Katrina Keyes, led a contingent of Black business people while DART union president, Kenneth Day, had his people in attendance.

lynnshaw.jpgThe major political story, however, was the unprecedented effort by Mayor Tom Leppert to lobby the DART board members for Ms. Shaw. Mayor Leppert was joined in his lobbying efforts by fellow City Council members Ron Natinsky, Jerry Allen, and Sheffey Kadane, who all tirelessly worked to get out the vote for Lynn Flint-Shaw.  But it was Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway and City Councilman Tennell Atkins who delivered while being under enormous political pressure from radical elements in the Black community who felt that Mr. Caraway and Mr. Atkins would not be able to get a Black person elected as Chairman.  “Not only did we get a Black woman to head DART, we got the best person available to head DART”, a jubilant Mr. Caraway stated. Mr. Atkins echoed those sentiments by saying, “Lynn is without question the best person to head DART and she just happens to be African-American.” The DART board members supporting Ms. Shaw were Pam Gates, Bob Strauss, Rev. Jerry Christian, William Tsao, Angie Chen Butler, Randall Chrisman, Scott Carlson, and Linda Paulk.

Ms. Shaw who is nationally known as a transit oriented development (TOD) expert said, “I was so proud and impressed by the way the African-American business community asserted itself in this process. And I am humbled by the efforts of Mayor Leppert, the City Council members, and the DART board members who all worked so hard to get me elected. I am ready to go to work.”

Lynn Flint Shaw is the wife of Dallas Blog columnist Rufus Shaw.

Honestly, I could care less about skin color, and more about qualifications.

Lynn has excelled in every civic endeavor that she has chosen to undertake. She has a deep network of relationships throughout the region with business, political and community leaders. Her leadership will serve DART well as it executes its vital mission of regional mass transit.

Congratulations Rufus, from I have watched you from Pearl C Anderson to Lincoln High School, while as youngster at Charles Rice I recall how I use to run up and down Exline Park not imatating Bob Hayes, but the speed of Rufus Shaw. What I am saying is you have always represented with class and intellect. Therefore, this is fitting for your better half. So this blessing for your wife is just "pressed down shaken together and running over"! Good measure meted with good measure. Now for the haters, they will catch that on the later!

Rufus,

You sure did marry well. Lynn will do a great job as chairman. She is honest, capable and will make a no-nonsense leader. It is also nice to see positive comments about something on the blog.

I am sure happy for DART and this region.Lynn will serve well.I supported her from the beginning because of her ability to disagree and remain civil, her understanding of issues and the big picture and at the same time serving people who need her help the most. You Go Girl! With women like Lynn Shaw older women like me can sit back go fishing knowing everything is working well.

As for Darren Reagan, well, we detail his sketchy past in our feature story, but Dallas Blog’s Rufus Shaw, an old adversary of his, puts it more memorably than we ever could: "Reagan is the type of individual where, if his ass is on the line, he’s going to flip and turn the table on whoever he needs to.”

I have dealt with Mrs. Shaw on the regional level and her expertise is phenomenal. She will make a great leader at DART!

She wasnt qualified in the first place...see the 1 billion dollar accounting error. Dallas is a laughing stock with its infrastructure run by amateurs.
