A&M target: Kubiak Print E-mail
by Dave McNabb    Tue, Oct 16, 2007, 03:50 PM

The emotional and financial war chests are being built by Texas A&M to make a huge run to entice former Aggies student Gary Kubiak out of the NFL and take over the A&M program before the Aggies fall too far behind.

Influential A&M movers and shakers said they are willing to take the financial bath to throw out Coach Dennis Franchione, who is not expected to survive another mediocre, unimpressive season and the fallout from his newsletter gaffe in which he gave A&M boosters supposedly inside info for an annual subscription.

Kubiak has been considered a success in his short tenure with the Houston Texans and although Kubiak is a fomer Aggies players and assistant under  R.C. Slocum, he's been dedicated to an NFL career path.

An emotional plea to save the program will be made to get Kubiak to take over the Aggies before they fall farther behind Texas Tech.

A&M is expected to be among a slew of coaching changes. An early peek at the front-runners for several positions.

A&M: Gary Kubiak

Nebraska: Turner Gill..was supposed to take over for Solich about now

Baylor: Mike Singletary.. now he's ready

SMU .. Terry Bowden .. campaiging for return to coaching

Dave, I don't know who you are talking to but among the folks I talk to Kubiak is not even on the radar screen. In the brief time he was an assistant at A&M, he did not seem to enjoy recruiting or college coaching. Nobody seriously thinks he would want to jump from the Texans to a college position, even with the Aggies.

Among possible pro candidates, Mike Sherman would be far more logical and realistic. With Tuberville's treatment at Auborn and his past A&M association, he is a logical candidate along with Tedford (who is stuck with 1920's facilities and bunch of tree-huggers who don't know a football from a pineapple) and many other college coaches.

gary isn't wild about recruiting and he loves his texans job.. but he's 3-3 and all coaches are hired to be fired so they try to leave ahead of the curve.. kubiak would bring buzz to aggieland and that's a key factor for the people coming up with some big money

i like tuberville and he's a solid coach, but where is the aggies enthusiasm other than he's not fran...he barely beat nebraska in the cotton bowl last year in a snoozer.. sherman is sort of in the same category... tedford is going to be the hottest coach available in a year clemson, arkansas, nebraska, possible lsu come open (lsu theory is les miles goes back to alma mater to replace retiring carr.. miles has one exemption to penalty in his contract and that's michigan)
