Richardson Berkner vs. Plano

7:30p.m. Friday at Clark Stadium

GameDay Information: A pre-game show hosted by Friday Night Gladiators, which broadcasts a live scoreboard show on Friday nights from 10 pm. to midnight on ESPN-FM (103.3) For more information, go to http://www.fridaynightgladiators.com

Scouting Berkner: (1-4, 0-2): The big question is if standout running back Josh Johnson can return after an ankle sprain in a double-overtime loss to Allen last week. Johnson (75 carries 775 yards) was in a boot Monday but it was diagnosed as just a good, old-fashioned ankle sprain and not the new-fangled, high-ankle sprain that can take weeks to overcome. Berkner isn't giving up the ghost about making the playoffs but realizes it's got to take some risks. Berkner was going to go for the 2-point conversion against Allen last week in the second overtime if it had scored a touchdown.

Scouting Plano (4-1, 1-1): The Wildcats are something of a surprise to some but Wildcats coach Gerald Brence thought he was on to something special this summer, which is why he negotiated so hard to have a final year of coaching before become the Plano ISD after this season. A huge surprise has been the uncanny accuracy of lefty junior quarterback Carson Meger, son of Lady Wildcats girls basketball coach Lynn. Carson throws darts from 30-yards. A 75 percent completion ratio (77-of-103, 2 interceptions). Plano has versatile offense with running back Rex Burkhead, receiver Kris Lott and Nate Christian. Defense is solid if not spectacular.

Pick: Give me the Wildcats, who are owed one by the Football Gods against Berkner. In Plano's winless 2003 season, in the final, going to go 0--for-10 game, Plano tied the score, 16-16, with a touchdown with 53 seconds left. J But Berkner's Aqib Talib (now a first-day NFL draft prospect at Kansas) broke through to block the extra point and keep the game tied. Berkner scored in the first overtime to win 22-16 and Plano went 0-10.
