Funds Will Support Local Military Families in Need

index_topDallasblog.jpgFORT WORTH, Texas – American Airlines and the Fort Worth Airpower Foundation (FWAPF) are once again uniting to support the families of North Texas military personnel. With the help of nearly 800 American Airlines and American Eagle employee volunteers, the fifth annual Sky Ball will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at American’s Alliance Airport maintenance hangar (AFW) to raise funds to benefit the families of deployed reservists and Guardsmen.

Ten thousand sailors, Marines, airmen, soldiers and members of the National Guard from North Texas serve our country, and thousands of them have been called to active duty and deployed overseas. When a breadwinner is called to serve, many families struggle to meet their financial obligations.

“American Airlines and American Eagle are proud to support our military personnel and their families through our continuing sponsorship of the Airpower Foundation’s Annual Sky Ball fundraiser,” said Roger Frizzell, American’s Vice President - Corporate Communications and Advertising. “It is an important way to honor these brave men and women, so many of whom are putting themselves in harm's way while serving our great nation and the cause of freedom.”

Proceeds from the Sky Ball provide financial assistance to military families on a case-by-case basis. Support comes in many different forms, including financial aid for deployment and welcome-home receptions, comfort gatherings for the families, support for the Welfare and Relief projects of the units assigned in North Texas, and delivering care packages and other gifts to the soldiers wounded in battle who are recuperating at military hospitals in Texas.

“I am always amazed and touched by the effort and dedication of our tireless volunteers, who spend months preparing for this event to support our military families,” said Graydon Vandament, Sky Ball V chairman. “The support we receive from American Airlines Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey and nearly 800 American Airlines and American Eagle employee volunteers, led this year by Romel Clayton, Manager, Production Control - Business Improvement Group, is the critical reason why this event is so successful.  American’s commitment to our troops and their families demonstrates that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and greatly appreciated.”

Sky Ball V will feature an evening of patriotic expression as well as entertainment.  The program will include the 301st Fighter Wing Color Guard from NAS-JRB Fort Worth, 2006 Miss Texas Shilah Phillips, The Dynamic Swing Machine band, The Vocal Majority, and The Riders of the Circle B, a country music and comedy group from Branson, Mo. Additional highlights will include a static aircraft display, silent and live auctions, and an automobile raffle.

“Last year’s event raised over $350,000 for the Navy-Marine Corps, National Guard Relief Fund and other needs for families at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base,” said Jim Thomason, chairman of the Fort Worth Airpower Council and Foundation (FWAPF). “This year we hope to raise more even more at Sky Ball V.  Our goal is to consistently extend the support the FWAPF can provide to these dedicated members of our community.”

Sponsorships, tables and raffle tickets are available for the event. Additional information about Sky Ball V can be found at www.fwapf.org/skyball. Click on the right information links. Tickets start at $150.
