Clinton, Romney Healthcare Plans Remarkably Similar PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Oct 5, 2007, 03:37 PM

Former governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, a Republican presidential candidate, often attacks Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton over her health insurance plan on the campaign trail.

As reported by Reuters, he calls Clinton’s plan, which would require every American to have health insurance, ‘European-style socialized medicine’ and derides it as inspired by ‘European bureaucracies’.

Nonetheless, Clinton’s plan borrows heavily from a healthcare bill Romney signed into law when he was governor of Massachusetts, which made the liberal state the first in the US with near universal health insurance.

Reuters quotes Jonathan Gruber, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics professor who was an adviser to Romney on the state’s health care reform law, as saying, “Hillary’s plan is just like the Massachusetts plan. There is not a whole lot of difference.”

The law Romney signed in April 2006 has an “individual mandate” that compels people to buy health insurance. It entailed subsidies and government regulations. Free coverage was provided for those in Massachusetts who earn less than the federal poverty level of $9,800.
