Texas Baptists May Choose Woman President PDF Print E-mail
by Tom Pauken    Fri, Oct 5, 2007, 02:17 PM

AP reports that “A former Southern Baptist missionary who got her start as a church secretary is likely to become the first woman president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

If Joy Fenner wins the election as expected at the end of this month, it will widen the gap between the conservative Southern Baptist Convention and the moderate Baptist General Convention of Texas, which has been distancing itself from the national denomination for years.”

The Southern Baptist Convention and the Texas Baptist Convention have been at loggerheads for a number of years even though many Baptist churches in Texas belong to both organizations. The Southern Baptist convention is the more conservative group of the two Conventions, and Ms. Fenner’s anticipated election is expected to deepen the split between the two groups.

If Joy Fenner wins the election later this month, she will preside over a Texas Baptist Convention that has “a $50 million annual budget and 2.3 million members”. Her election as woman president would follow on the heels of the U.S. Episcopal Church which elected its first woman president, Katharine Jefferts Scholi, last June.
