AP reports that “A former Southern Baptist missionary who got her start as a church secretary is likely to become the first woman president of the Baptist General Convention of If Joy Fenner wins the election as expected at the end of this month, it will widen the gap between the conservative Southern Baptist Convention and the moderate Baptist General Convention of The Southern Baptist Convention and the Texas Baptist Convention have been at loggerheads for a number of years even though many Baptist churches in If Joy Fenner wins the election later this month, she will preside over a Texas Baptist Convention that has “a $50 million annual budget and 2.3 million members”. Her election as woman president would follow on the heels of the U.S. Episcopal Church which elected its first woman president, Katharine Jefferts Scholi, last June.
