The campaign for the November “to have a toll road or not to have a toll road election” is turning into a game of truth or consequences. Dallas Morning News editorials and pro toll road advocates are promoting the idea that if the toll road is removed from the Trinity River project, funding for the entire project might be in jeopardy. The problem with this scenario is the word “might”. I have yet to see a definite statement from a government official holding the purse strings on this project state that removing the toll road from the Trinity River project will “guarantee” that the project will not be funded.

If you take the pro toll road forces at their word, keeping the toll road in the Trinity River project is a guarantee for funding. No citizen in his right mind would throw away millions of dollars in development money just because Angela Hunt and her park loving supporters don’t want a “motor speedway” running through the park proposed in the Trinity River project. The problem is the pro toll road forces have not proven their position that all of the Trinity River project money will be lost or even that the project will be delayed without the toll road. We have heard a lot of talk that it might lose its funding or it might be delayed. And yeah, Dallas County Commissioners are threatening to take their money but even their declaration seems a bit befuddled.

So far, pro toll road forces are using a strategy intended to scare voters and the opposition with the fact that literally all of the political, business, and media elite are supporting the toll road initiative. However, they still have not made their case. For example, the so called “domino effect” where one funding entity pulls its money and the rest of the funding sources follow suit has not been proven. We are still getting mixed messages from toll road advocates as to just how probable such a domino effect really is. It seems to me that it should not be too difficult for the folks willing to fund this project to publicly state that they will all pull their money out of the Trinity River project if the toll road does not run through the park. In other words, you vote “no” to the toll road and you lose millions of dollars. How hard is that? It must be pretty difficult because we have yet to see these folks who actually control the money come out and state what pro toll road forces want the electorate to believe.

I still have not heard a clear message to Black voters why we should support the toll road. I would imagine the pro toll road brain thrust is having a difficult time coming up with a message that has any credibility with the Black community. You see, they must first explain to the Black electorate why we should support an initiative championed by the same white business community who has yet to fulfill its promises to the Black electorate when we first voted for the Trinity River project. I suspect proponents of the toll road will seek to bury this fact. I intend to keep it alive until the issue of southern sector neglect and those responsible for it are held politically accountable. It ought to be hard for those folks selling this issue to the Black community to do so without making good on their past promises.

The anti-toll road forces will be vastly outspent and just about every elected official in Dallas is against them. Yet, their cause is not entirely hopeless. Pro toll road forces cannot afford to get caught misrepresenting the financial implications of the toll road not being in the Trinity River project. If government officials tell us that the project can still be funded without the toll road, then a major part of the pro toll road forces’ message is lost. And if City Councilwoman Angela Hunt can stoke the African-American community’s anger at the “white powers that be” who are simultaneously supporting the toll road and neglecting Black business development, than Black voters may either stay at home or vote against the toll road in protest. Either way, the anti- toll road forces benefit, and the pro toll road forces look a little less invincible. At least that is how I see it from South of the Trinity.

There is no reason the toll road cannot go down Industrial. It lines up better with the freeways the toll road is supposed to be relieving.

Angela Hunt has at least 80,000 CITY voters who already know how they are voting. Pro toll roaders claim to have all the Chamber of Commerce groups behind them, but we know much of their membership do not live in the city limits of Dallas.

Southern Sector voters fell for campaign promises that a new Basketball arena would benefit them, but it killed the convention center business. Southern Sector voters fell for campaign promises that the Trinity Project would connect them to the rest of the city, but it's been 10 years.

Again, I am so thrilled the African-American community of Dallas is no longer some monolithic group that a handful of bought "leaders" can control.

My friend, Dwaine Caraway, supports a toll road inside the Trinity levees, but that doesn't mean everyone in his circle agrees. Michael Davis supports Angela Hunt's position, but he and Dwaine are close friends and political allies.

It's a good day in Dallas when Black voters can't be bought as a block. Now, City Hall has to deal with Southern Sector issues and not just buy off a couple of politicians.

Rufus, you started this trend of individual thinking. I'm really proud of your stamina and the results of your many years of "preaching" to the Black community to pay attention and think for themselves.

My thinking, is that the drivers entering the southern end of the proposed toll road would be coming from i75 or the Kaufman "Cedar Creek" lake Henderson County folks and would bypass Dallas, not buying gasoline or spending money in the southern sector moving on to the Irving or Farmers Branch area befor getting of the road, and even on to DFW Airport. Dallas would not benefit from the toll revenue so,where should we stand?

To further complicate things, if one wants to vote “no” to the toll road, the vote must be expressed as a FOR vote. An AGAINST vote is a vote for the tollroad within the levees.

So it'll be YES for just a Park or NO for a Park with a high-speed, 6-lane tollroad running through it.

Oh, you haven't heard the new lie being peddled by BELO? Last night on CH. 8 news, they stated the city would lose federal funding for the Mixmaster improvements if we voted down the tollway. Next, I am expecting them to say the sun will go out if we don't ruin our park with a tollway.

Another point that has always troubled me is that the southern end of this highspeed tollroad goes right through a South Dallas neighborhood. Who in the world would want another highspeed road right in the middle of their neighborhood? That won't do anything to rejuvenate the neighborhood. It will only serve to isolate it further.

HSH is correct the Toll road as design goes right over the Public Housing units in South Dallas. The DHA has plans to demolish and rebuild the Community. I am not sure what a Toll road over your head will do to the
quality of life of residents. The noise, pollution, accidents and other activity associated with a six lane high speed road in the middle of a neighborhood.

A few things to set the record straight on the flood control funding:
1. The toll road referendum will have no effect on the Water Resource Act of 2007.
2. Both the President as well as some of the Senate's senior Democrats are trying to alter or kill the bill as it is now.

Sen. Russ Feingold is leading the effort to bring more accountability to the Army Corp of Engineers. The Army Corp, as Shutze has pointed out in his recent articles, is a 'creature of earmark spending'. A recent edition of Time referred to the Corp as having '535 bosses' who dictate their projects through funding (ala Sessions, EBJ, Hensarling). This gives special interest groups, in Louisiana as well as Dallas and any other city with a harbor, flood way, reservoir, ECT, a golden opportunity to get between us and our tax dollars. We the taxpayers pay for the levees, the sump stations, and whatever modifications that nearby infrastructure need. Then the developers and land barons come in and turn the dirt, and they WILL be asking for tax subsidies with every shovel of Dallas dirt that they do turn. If the levees that we paid for are ever breached, then all of the flood insurance claims are made with the National Flood Insurance Program. We pay for the up front cost AND alot of the liability that this boondoggle brings, the special interest/business community only has to pay for some bricks and mortar and campaign contributions to crooked ass polititians, then they get all of the gravy. Yeah, I guess a little of that gravy will trinkle down to the rest of us, but I prefer not to eat off of the floor. Back to the Water Resource bill in the Senate. Some of the Senate Leadership wants to increase independent oversight of the Army Corp. Get this, they think that alot of these 'flood control' projects around the U.S. are really just land grabs and publicly financed private developments. They could not possibly talking about the Trinity River Project? Could They?

I filed a request for a RICO criminal investigation with Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins this past friday. Here's the last sentence's in the two page request, which is now a public document:

"Who owns multiple properties in the Levee St. area, and near the planned Ostentaceous Oaklawn, near the artistic Calatrava/Hunt bridge. Ed Oakley!!! Attachment A shows 5 properties now owned by former city council member Ed Oakley.

I believe Jim Schutze, former Dallas Mayoral Candidates Darrell Jordan, and Sam Coats at least (there may be others) have publically questioned the conflict-of-interests of Oakley owning a few parcels of land in this skyrocketing land value area, and being the former City Council Chair of the Trinity Corridor.

Conflict of interests? Heck, let's start callin' it for what it is increasingly looking like...
A POSSIBLE RICO CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPECIAL INTERESTS TO LINE THE POCKETS OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPECIAL INTERESTS.

Obviously, Mr. Oakley hasn’t acted alone. He has been supported by a Special Interest group.

Who is this “Special Interest” group? Take a look at the list of those contributing to the "Save the Trinity" group. It's the Who's Who of the Dallas Elite. And then there's former Mayors Kirk and Miller, current Mayor Leppert, and much of the seated Dallas City Council, and the former City Council, the Dallas Planning Commission, and the list goes on. And what a misnomer: “Save the Trinity” for who? Obviously for the monied elite, for the Special Interest group!

I am calling for an immediate investigation into a possible Trinity River Rico Criminal Conspiracy involving the highest echelon of Dallas Public and Private Special Interests...the collusion of some of Dallas monied elite, government officials, and some media outlets….like the Dallas Morning News.

In this alledged Rico conspiracy, public tax money, and public officials have been used to create a situation to enrich a Special Interest Group. The planned outcome is the following:

1. Hundreds of millions of tax money “into the pockets” of the Special Interests.
2. Billions in revenue from the planned New Eliteville development to the Special Interests.
3. An exclusive Trinity River Park which will exclude the Dallas minority working class, whose taxes paid for the park. The planned Trinity River Park, being called Dallas "New York's Central Park", will be a picture postcard for the new Eliteville...look but don't touch, look but don't go in there.
Calling the Trinity River Park bigger and better then New York’s Central Park is the biggest lie to be perpertrated on the citizens of any city in our nation.

Mr. Watkins, your office has also experienced the consequences of Special Interests, a group of people who get their power by victimizing the minority class, the Special Interests who get their wealth through a criminal criminal-justice-system that you are now reforming. The corruption of the Trinity River project is just another manifestion of Special Interest activities."

I hate to pick a fight with a fellow blogger,but Richie Sheridan, you are out of your friging mind. Psychosis "delusions,hallucination,and disorganized speech and behavior" bu definition may have caused your personal feelings toward ex-Mayor Miller and ex-Councilman Oakley have screwed up your rational thinking. Both had their faults as well as stheair good points, but leave sleeping dogs lie. Neither will become wealthy because of their service to the City of Dallas.

To Richie Sheridan, I just ran the Levee St. list of comercial property owners on DCCAD and found no evidence of Ed Oakley ownership or Miller. Where, or what do you base your asserations upon?

I've been called worse. You are obviously very ill informed. Both Laura Miller and Ed Oakley are criminals, err, excuse me, alledged criminals.

Who knows that Miller's husband almost single handedly deregulated the electric utility in Texas during the time that Enron was creating havoc with California's electric utility?

We are living in one of the most corrupt times in the history of our countryl and our city. Anyone who doesn't know this I feel sorry for.

What has DA Craig Watkins uncovered with Dallas County's criminal criminal justice system?

Now, you have started this. I was corrupted a long time ago by Texas politicians, by night club owners such as Jack Ruby,by liquor store owners, by apartment managers, and DPD officers who gave tickets by the hundreds per month. Never has an honest Dallasite such as yourself filed
charges against those that have alledgedly criminalized me. Fraud is just another way for scumbags to make a gainful living. Steve Wollens in one of the most honest attorneys in Texas politics let alone Dallas. His wife our ex-mayor was a journalist superior to any out there now. She couldn't get the council together nor can the new mayor. I will again stand up for Oakley until you can prove to me his honest investments in railroad right of way in Industal area is bad for the citizens of Dallas. He is planning to use the land as a golf course "pitch and putt" and also it could be used to be the surety for bail bonds to get criminals charged with things,while waiing for trial. Wake up, Richie.
