Split in Anglican Church Widens PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Aug 31, 2007, 11:38 AM

The CBS News website reports that two American Episcopalian priests were consecrated as Anglican bishops at All Saints’ Cathedral in Nairobi, Kenya. One of them, the Rev. Bill Atwood, was from Carrollton, Texas. This is the latest in a string of conservative, Anglican priests who are defecting to African churches in a dispute over gay clergy.

As reported by CBS News, “Bill Atwood of Texas and William Murdoch of Massachusetts left the Episcopal Church – the U.S. branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion, because it allows the ordination of gay priests.”

The spiritual head of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has asked African archbishops not to consecrate U.S. clergy as Anglican bishops to help avoid a schism in the Anglican Communion. But, Archbishop Williams has no direct authority to stop these consecrations of new Anglican bishops because each Anglican province is self-governing.

According to CBS News, “The Anglican Communion has moved towards the brink of splitting since the Episcopal Church consecrated its first openly gay bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, in 2003. Most of the fellowships’ 77 million members are based in the developing world, where homosexuality is strongly discouraged and often illegal.”
