Heading into their season openers, Carter and Rockwall have high hopes for their Class 5A seasons. But, in reality, their brightest futures may lie in upcoming seasons under UIL realignment.
Rockwall is coming off a District 10-5A title and will challenge powerful Garland and South Garland for '07 championship.
But Rockwall ISD athletic director Mark Elam said Rockwall's enrollment numbers likely will send the schoo into Class 4A in the next realignment.
Rockwall ISD opened Heath two years ago and it already is a competitor in District 10-4A. Elam said both schools should be Class 4A with enrollment numbers no higher than 1,900 submitted in October.
Carter has long been Dallas' top 5A power but coach Allen Wilson seems to have the support of new superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa in having Carter play at Class 4A in the future.
Carter's enrollment numbers are down to 1,600 Wilson said. Carter has opted to play up a division in the past but Hinojosa has told DISD administrators he's in favor of each school playing at the proper enrollment level.
The signifigance of a move to a lower class. The top two Class 4A state-ranked teams _ Copperas Cove and Waco _ are both coming down from 5A.
