Ah, I remember a simpler time. … Before Steve Nash was a bigshot, before high-school football was worthy of crazy praise, before coverage of a celeb suicide attempt was so dubious. ...
ITEM: Not that I begrudge Steve Nash for somehow blossoming into Somebody Who Is Important. He appears on “The Charlie Rose Show,’’ (here’s the video link) in a chair usually reserved for dry authors and staid politicians? Grand. I’m just saying I liked Stevie better when he was Our Stevie, when he was a little bit loopy, harbored no questions about his lack of global import, and was a good enough friend to DallasBasketball.com that he’d sit around with us and talk about stuff like his love of Radiohead, Bill Murray and Jennifer Lopez. ITEM: Mark Cuban’s competition for the upcoming “Dancing With The Stars’’ crown? The list is leaked. And by "stiff,'' yes, I'm referring to their probable dancing skilz. ITEM: NBA people and which Presidential candidates they give money to. Fascinating stuff, but none of them are as smart as Jerry Jones, who back in the early ‘90s told me he was donating to the campaigns of Bill Clinton, Clayton Williams and Ann Richards. … just in case any one of them happened to end up winning a position of power. ITEM: Michael Vick found Jesus, admits to being “immature’’ and promises, “I will redeem myself.’’ I think maybe one of the three is true. ITEM: Tim Donaghy has a mistress. Bringing new meaning to the NBA refs’ recent move to “three-person crews.’’ ITEM: My man Dan Shanoff, a deep thinker, offers an interesting suggesting for why the Falcons should throw the season. ITEM: Speaking of deep (but still a quick read): Hop over to Dave McNabb's jottings on all the hype surrounding Southlake Carroll High's football team. This "idyllic'' talk, Dave astutely points out, simply sets up a bunch of normal people for an eventual normal fall. ITEM: And one more thing on the media's handling of a story: Dallas-based actor Owen Wilson either did or did not attempt suicide this week. I'll pray for him while pondering why the coverage of this story is so venemous in LA and so non-existent in Big D. What are they so bloodthirtsy for? And what are we so afraid of?
