We begin the Name-Dropping by introducing Dirk Nowitzki to Gertrude Stein. ... ITEM: From Tahiti to Australia to New Zealand, The UberMan searches. For a haircut? Maybe. For a back-to-the-basket game? Nah. For a taste of anonymity? Probably. But mostly. … Says Dirk Nowitzki: “I have been exploring the sense of life. I haven’t entirely found it yet, but I will keep looking.’’ As usual, some things are a bit lost in the translation with Dirk. I’m assuming his “sense of life’’ thing was said tongue-in-cheek. But just in case he’s trying to go all existential on us, let me rely on Gertrude Stein to clear things up for The UberMan. As Ms. Stein once said, “There ain’t no answer. There ain’t gonna be any answer. There never has been an answer. That’s the answer.’’ So, Dirk, now that you know that. … dump the search. Work on the post game. ITEM: Guess who’s going to be part of the fascinating, messy, promising Sonics situation? Old friend Matt Pinto! Congrats to Matt – the former Mavs TV guy – who gets a new radio gig with the Sonics. ITEM: The “rogue’’ referee pleads guilty so now all the NBA’s problems in this area will gently fade away. … Not. A good wrapup at TrueHoop. ITEM: A Friend of Fish says Michael Vick is going down one way or another. His reasoning? Even if the law doesn’t crush him on the dogfighting stuff, the NFL will get him on the gambling side of things. Oh, and. … ITEM: Another Friend of Fish who happens to be friendly with Vick is absolutely certain that the Falcons are secretly, oddly fine with the idea of their QB getting canned for misbehavior. … because then they can get out of a contract they were already regretting. ITEM: A USA Basketball update from Las Vegas: Is Dwight Howard a centerpiece of this whole thing? I’m comfortable with that. ITEM: I get to go to Mavs road games. … and still be home 90 minutes afterwards. Besides that, though, I can’t think of anything positive about the Sonics’ move to OKC. ITEM: Barry Bonds is hiring a lawyer to defend him against steroid charges. What took so long? ITEM: Veterans who were in Iraq want a deeper probe into the Pat Tillman coverup. Coverup? What coverup? Hey, Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld were responsible for sending ‘em over there, but they wash their hands of how the guys are supposed to get back. ITEM: From a member of The 75-Member Staff who personally spoke to Reggie Miller over the weekend: the former Pacers sharpshooter really, really wants to come back. ITEM: Was Katrina aid meant to help investors build football-themed luxury condos? ITEM: Remember ‘Why Johnny Can’t Read’? Here’s ‘Why Mark Cuban Can’t Write.’’
