A lethargic morning workout, but nevertheless an energetic afternoon Four-Down Territory live from Camp Cowboys in San Antonio! ...
FIRST DOWN: Why the lethargy? Terrell Owens didn’t bother showing up to play wide receiver while nursing a hammy. Kyle Kosier returned to Dallas for the day to witness the birth of his child. Terry Glenn was scheduled to undergo "minor'' knee surgery. Add to that the lack of pads and the injury situations involving Flozell Adams, Aaron Glenn and Greg Ellis -- who is turning into this team's Fred Sanford with his funny bitterness -- and the whole thing featured the star power of, say, a fourth preseason game. SECOND DOWN: Jerry Jones didn't like something D-coordinator Brian Stewart did in a drill that led to a minor injury to Jason Hatcher. When will the first media idiot claim that 'damn Jones is trying to be a coach again!'? THIRD DOWN: It makes for a good newspaper column, but listen to what O-coordinator Jason Garrett tells me about Julius Jones vs. Marion Barber III: “I don’t see the need to make an issue of ‘who’ll be the starter.’ We need them both. It’s not an issue to us.’’ FOURTH DOWN: Speaking of running backs, I’m trying to get a handle on Irving native Tyson Thompson’s status on this team. He’s got fine size, he’s a good guy, he may be the fastest player on the roster, he’s rather established as a kickoff returner. … yet, Jackie Battle is pushing him as the third running back and Miles Austin might be pushing him as a kick returner. So while there is little security for TT, know these two things: 1) “We could use a real home-run hitter at running back,’’ said one team source. 2) This spring and summer, Tyson has received an assortment of encouraging phone calls from a football fan who thinks highly of him. That person? Jerry Jones. And there goes that damn Jones again, trying to be a coach. ...
