Future Stars North Texas Style: Top 15U baseball prospects PDF Print E-mail
by Dave McNabb    Fri, Jul 20, 2007, 07:31 PM

North Texas’ baseball hotbed of talent has another class already blossoming.

Several are already well established after standout freshman seasons at varsity programs. Plano West’s Ryan Ford led the Wolves through the Class 5A playoffs. Right-handed pitcher Zach Lee and hard-hitting shortstop Matt Lipka guided McKinney through the playoffs before losing in the quarterfinals to eventual Class 4A state finalist Mesquite Poteet. Rockwall Heath's Drew Benefield was his district Newcome of the Year.

Making Rockwall Heath competitive as a first-year program was hard-throwing right-hander Drew Benefield, a longstanding member of Rockwall-based Texas Sports. Plano East’s Conner Zmolack, whose brother is former East start Wes Bankston,  is a standout for the Dallas Mustangs.

 A glimpse at the future:

Jake Wakamatsu does not play for Team Kelley... I believe you mean Craig Hayes...10 5A Second Team All District player (on varsity) at South Garland High School and Team Kelley's stand-out catcher.

cameron allerheiligen and wes jones play for nortex...maybe some future plans at DBAT? interesting..

Craig Hayes does deserve to be on the list! Get real - he played varsity 5a ball in a competitive district. Others on the list have yet to prove themselves.

...
written by Madebe , July 21, 2007

Chase Weaver plays for DBAT

...
written by cantonite , July 21, 2007

what about Watkins for Texas Hurricanes?

Congrats to everyone that made the list.

...
written by Said , July 21, 2007

Chase Weaver plays for DBAT. Jones and Allerheiligen plays for Nortx

written by Dirtbag , July 21, 2007

WOW... My money is on that Roundtripper is Craig's dad. haha.

...
written by BHayes , July 21, 2007

Dirtbag it wasn't me, I identify myself when I comment! The list has plenty of great kids on it and it is good that they are mentioned.

...
written by davidm , July 21, 2007

Leaving Hayes off was a MISTAKE ... He was on my list on the word document ...thanks for the fixes on teams.. i knew that I was going to get a couple wrong .. and yes i think there may be some nor tex to dbat news ... also there a couple players on the list that are looking at private schools as well

...
written by Baseball1 , July 22, 2007

Understand there could be possible news developing between NorTex ands Hurricanes for next year.

...
written by wow! , July 22, 2007

Wow!
This list is interesting and is missing many players! Half the kids on here dont even play varsity ball and play on there jv at school. The only reason most are on here is because they get recognized because there coaches and parents talk so highly of them and so Dave Mcnabb puts them on here. I dont really think Dave has seen any of these kids play and should revise his list.

...
written by REBEL , July 22, 2007

Power lefty Cody Polk (Richland) should be on this list.

...
written by Secret Keeper , July 22, 2007

The DBAT team will have a few from Nortex, a few from the Hurricanes, a few from "another area" team and other players from the area that only DBAT can attract. The cherry picking has begun!!! GO DBAT!!!

...
written by HA HA HA HA , July 22, 2007

The list is a joke. How many on here are coaches sons??? Fiction can be fun!!

...
written by Baller , July 23, 2007

sounds like a bunch of "Daddy Ball"

...
written by Karen Collins , July 23, 2007

Mr. McNabb,
I continue reading your articles and now your list. Thanks for talking with the high school and select coaches to get your information.

I look forward to reading more.

...
written by Dirtbag , July 23, 2007

I think the list is great. I think the people that don't like it... well you can figure it out. If Roundtripper is not BH then roundtripper tell us all who you are. CP good but POWER Pitcher??????

...
written by Dirtbag , July 23, 2007

Oh I thought I should say I do not have a 15 year old kid. So this list is not a one that I have an agenda over.

...
written by Dirtbag , July 23, 2007

HA HA HA HA to answer your question there is only one kid on this list that is a coaches son. I will say I do not know every kid on the list but I do know 95% of them. So there may be one more.

...
written by roundtripper2 , July 23, 2007

Too Funny! Nortex/Hurricanes are combining to TRY and beat Team Kelley....I hope the kids are developing!~

...
written by FMJAGS9 , July 23, 2007

ATTENTION all Hurricanes coaches and parents. Please contact coach Rookie (Team Kelley) ASAP and ask him what happen when Team Kelley merged with the Rattlers (now Nortex). Be careful what you wish for!!!!

...
written by bystander , July 23, 2007

Now Dirtbag, the list is great?

I think there are some great kids on the list, but there are some that many consider average "select" players. Which is above the average High School Baseball player. And many above-average "select" that were left off of the list like CP.

Maybe Mr. McNabb should have a certain # of players on this list and continual update it as he watches more 15U...soon to be 16U baseball. Not only add, but delete as necessary.

Also, Dirtbag, why do you need to know who roundtripper is? I don't know them, but maybe you should identify yourself, if that matters?

Hey Roundtripper(2?), Secret Keeper seems to have some info? Sounds like it is a "few" from each of those teams and many others from around the metroplex? I haven't seen anything about TRYing to beat Team Kelley though. Do you have that inside scoop?

...
written by Fact Finder , July 23, 2007

It was the Texas Steel that combined with the Rattlers to form Team Kelley.

...
written by BHayes , July 23, 2007

Dirtbag

I don't know who roundtripper is, but I see that there is now a second version.

I counted two coaches kids.

I have seen most of the kids play, but not this year as our team hasn't played very often locally or in many 15U tournaments.

I agree that CP should be on the list and there probably a few more.

DBAT will put together an outstanding team no matter where the players come from, they are a great organization -- playing with or against them, either is exciting for the kids.

written by Always a Proud Cane , July 23, 2007

I am glad that some of you know what the Hurricanes plan to do next year!HA As a parent of one of them, I guess I will need to confer with you about our future. Just let the kids play and enjoy the great competion all these teams bring us.

...
written by Future DBATTER , July 24, 2007

Hey this was supposed to be a secret. My son has been asked and he can't wait!FYI, he's neither a Hurricane or a Nortex player. From what I understand (from whos already committed) it will be a very talent laden team and will give anyone a run for their money.

...
written by Said , July 24, 2007

Proud Cane,
No one is saying they know what the Canes are doing next year. But they do know what Dbat's doing and some of the players they're recruiting.

...
written by HardWorkpaysoff! , July 24, 2007

As a parent of one mentioned on this list, I appreciate Mr. McNabb's effort for these young men! Thank you Mr. McNabb for a job well done!

Making this list can make your son feel good for a moment, but without continual hard work, being on this list will mean nothing!

"North Texas’ baseball hotbed of talent"

Call North Texas whatever you want but there is no other hotbed of talent that even compares to Houston. Scouts, Coaches, & writers will agree 100%. Texas as a whole is very respectable in projectable talent but no area compares to Houston.

...
written by Dirtbag , July 24, 2007

Isn't funny that Roundtripper has not come on and said who he is???? Once again I have no aganda and the ones that do are the ones on this blog saying BS to this list. List are great and if your kid is not on that list use it to motivate him to get on the next list. I had a son that was not on the PG prospect list and he worked his A** of to earn a D1 scholarship. He is in his 4th year and has been a 2 year starter in the Sunbelt Conf.

written by baseball fan nt , July 24, 2007

Obviously if you Coach a team your son will be nominated regardless. I guess that is a benefit of being a Coach. Hello Daddy Ball!

...
written by bystander , July 24, 2007

Dirtbag, that is awesome about your son! I can only hope that my son will have the work ethic to do the same. Lists can be great motivators, but my son would not be motivated by this list at all. Some are well deserved, some suprised they weren't on there and some you have to scratch your head and wonder???

"Making this list can make your son feel good for a moment, but without continual hard work, being on this list will mean nothing!"

SO TRUE!

Congrats to your son!

I am a little ashamed at some of the above comments. Please remember that we are adults and we need to act like it as we set the example for our children.

Cody Polk was left off as an oversight I'm sure. He has been a very outstanding player and highly thought of by his team. His ability as a pitcher and team player has proven he is an outstanding young man with a lot of talent.

Just to set the record straight, The Texas Steel and The Rattlers did merge about three to four years ago, howver, they recruited players from the Hurricanes, The Express, and several other teams. Very few of the current Team Kelley players played for either the Rattlers nor Steel.

...
written by cantonite , July 25, 2007

Polk should have been added to the list!

...
written by Cade , July 25, 2007

For all of you that think you know what is going on. You don"t.... I have made no commitments up to this point. There may be some kids that I like on the Canes and some I may like on the Nortx team. Hell I may like a few guys on the Kelly team, but that means nothing. No one is for sure on a DBAT team until after the fall. All I know is Rob and Dillon are good guys and I may want to talk to them after the season is over. As far as building a team to beat Team Kelly is the least of my worries. I have to woory about the Mustangs and Tigers. Mark my works Kelly in a few years will have to do a total makeover before they will be able to compete with the big 3. I think Rookie has done a great job with the younge team. But once you get to the 17 and 18 year old level things change. I would like to see Team Kelly play in the BBI league next year and compete with everyone else. It will be a win win for everyone. Let's all just have fun and watch the kids play.

You left off several north texas players from Fort Worth. Tyler Ervine-Southwest (Reds), Luis Vasquez-Crowley, Tyler Nurdin-Paschal (FW Cats), Max Smith-Arlington Heights (Mustangs) Kirby Campbell-Paschal (Cats)

...
written by n2deep , July 26, 2007

when you say big 3 are you refering to east cobb, norcal, or the Roadrunners.

...
written by baseball07 , July 26, 2007

I just find it odd that there are only a handful of teams that are being mentioned as well as kids. There are many more teams that are just as competitive and probably have a better record if you look at the tournaments they have played in as well as season play. I am curious where Mr. Mcnabb is getting his information? It seems pretty obvious that the teams and kids are getting their plugs from their coaches and parents. There are several freshman kids that were on my varisty high school team that were not mentioned. Our varisty did go to State. I am a little confused why those kids are not mentioned???

...
written by baseball07 , July 26, 2007

One more comment - do we also not look at the kids overall. I am curious about grades, behavior, etc.??? I know for a fact 1 kid you listed has been sent to an Alternative school for behavior. I really think you should do your research!!!

...
written by bystander , July 26, 2007

need2deep,

LOL The article is on North Texas area? And you asking what he means by Big 3?

...
written by 1stRnd2012 , July 27, 2007

You all have it all confused. Southern California baseball is the hotbed of talent. While you all are fighting over daddy ball, my boys are practicing and playing to get better. lol ;-) 1. California 2. Florida 3. Texas don't forget the order.

...
written by Heat07 , July 27, 2007

The big three should stretch themselves more and come down to Houston where the real baseball is.

The Heat has gone underground in Premier Baseball. No one cares about them. I believe I - 45 runs in two directions.
