Texas Hurricanes fall to East Cobb (Ga.) in U15 Premier final PDF Print E-mail
by Dave McNabb    Sun, Jul 15, 2007, 08:44 PM

ADDISON, Texas _ The East Cobb (Ga.) Astros came to North Texas with their high-powered reputation as one of the nation's top youth baseball teams. East Cobb left with its reputation intact.

East Cobb run-ruled the Texas Hurricanes, 10-2, Sunday afternoon at Trinity Christian-Addison in the final of the 15U Premier Championship featuring some of the top under-15 teams in the Mid- and South-west. The Hurricanes had a strong run to reach the final. The North Texas-based Hurricanes beat the Wichita (Kan.) Sluggers in the semifinals after earlier eliminating the McKinney Marshals.

East Cobb (47-3) got a stellar complete-game, at times overpowering pitching performance from Connor Mason, a lanky righty reminiscent of La Grange star Homer Bailey when he led his team to a Class 3A state title as a freshman. Bailey is a starting pitcher for the Reds now.

East Cobb smacked line drives and took advantage of some shaky Hurricanes defense with the 5-inning win. East Cobb's Zach Alvord and Kenny Reeves each went 2-for-2. For the tournament, shortstop Alvord was 9-for-16 with a home run, triple and four doubles.

East Cobb didn't go through the tournament undefeated. North Texas-based Team Kelley defeated East Cobb in pool play. It was quite the showdown for a pool game as the two had met in the Elite 24 championship for U14 last year with Cobb winning and being tabbed by many as the No. 1 team nationally in the age group.

East Cobb defeated the Mo-Kan Giants in the semifinals. Team Kelley, led by star McKinney freshman pitcher Zach Lee, was eliminated by the Wichita Sluggers.

The Hurricanes tried to stop East Cobb by bringing in ace Nick Watkins (Mineola) but to no avail. Watkins was dominating Saturday in a 5-0 win over McKinney. The Hurricanes also got standout relief pitching by Travis Brewster (Mesquite Horn) throughout the tourney and strong hitting by catcher Christian Cline (Richardson) and first baseman/outfielder Jake Sutton (Mesquite Poteet).

Later this week:

A list: North Texas' top 15U players

Thanks for the article, Mr. McNabb. Nice to see summer baseball represented. There are many strong summer teams and tournaments in the Metro-plex, with outstanding players from 15U-18U.

I'm getting a lot of support to have a website that covers baseball somewhat close to what we cover football ... nearly every baseball field i go to on weekends is filled with kids or adult baseball leagues so there's got to be an interest

Your article fails to mention the efforts of Hurricane ace Travis Ballew (Rockwall). Ballew, nursing a strained tendon in his pitching hand, secured the Hurricanes' quarter-final berth pitching 4 shutout innings in relief in the 9-inning 7-4 victory over the Centex Buzz. Ballew was called on again, starting the following day in the semi-final victory against a strong hitting Wichita Sluggers team, giving up one hit through 4 innings before relinquishing the lead in the 5th and giving way to Brewster.

Mr. Jacobs,

From what I understand Mr. McNabb went up to each coaches and asked who got them there...asks who was their aces/stars in the tournament. The kids mentioned in this article were whom the coach tauted.

I hope actual research is done on the North Texas' top 15U players rather than just asking coaches opinions in one tournament. Here a few of the top true freshmen(15U) that made HUGE impacts on VARSITY baseball as well as on their respective summer teams.

Ryan Ford-Plano West-All District DH.
Zach Lee - McKinney District Newcomer of the Year.
Matt Lipka- McKinney -District Offensive Player of Year.
Connor Zmolick -Plano East- First Team All District.
Daryn Alves-Boyd- Second Team All District.
Jake Sutton- Mesquite Poteet- State runner ups.
Drew Benefield- Rockwall-Heath.
Craig Hayes- South Garland High.
Shane Henderson-Flower Mound High

are you rating players off one tournament or the season?

The kid from Mineola that pitched for the Hurricanes by the name of Watkins was really good in the tournament. I believe he pitched a few innings in relief against MO-KAN, started the game against the KC Sluggers, started and pitched five or six innings against the McKinney Marshals, and came in relief against East Cobb. He also made 2nd team all district and helped his high school team advance to the regional semifinals.

i've been talking to coaches... most recommend everyone on their team .. the task is to get them to name other players that don't play for them .. that's primarily how I got my list that i should be able to post friday morning .. checking a few things..
baseball fan has an excellent list .. don't know if i'll go so far as boyd (alves), mineola (nick watkins, who has a new coach at HS) cause then you get to texarkana and they have kid like lefty josh turley who'd have to be on the 16U list i'm working on too

I'll take abuse on friday cause i'll miss a couple

Travis Brewster is THE ace of the Texas Hurricanes pitching staff. Hands down.

Watkins is the REAL DEAL now and will be in the future and has played in dallas now for three to five years and should be considered. Mineola is 75 miles from Dallas while Texarkana is 180 miles.

The Coach for the Canes is guy named Cline. Call him and find out who the ace is, it is my understanding that Watkins, Bewster, and Ballew are the top pitchers. I know from experience that Watkins from Mineola can pitch. His 1.33 ERA was tops in a very tough district. Kudos to all three pitchers! They all should be considered!!!

Having watched the 15 and under teams play all year, several names come to mind.

Drew Bennefield cather, Zach Lee pitcher/1st Team, Nic Watkins pitcher/3rd, Matt Lipka SS, Christian Cline OF, Craig Hayes C/3RD, Daryn Alves, Ryan Ford, Jake Sutton 1st, and a player from Dallas Tigers that had an impressive bat (cannot remeber name). In addition, Nortex has three quality players. I also rember a player from Lone Oak that was a standout at ss. Obviously, several players on the list will come from the the top teams as would be expected.

Good luck with making the decisions!top

Hopefully Mr. McNabb will not listen to personal opinions, even from coaches that may not have an unbiased opinion? Or only accept their opinions about kids from other teams?

WOW, Sounds like there is some emotion here about who is the Ace on this one team? What does it matter...be proud of your "team". I thought that was the point we try to teach our kids about any sport.
