SAMMY AND SLEEP PDF Print E-mail

Was it a "romantic'' moment? Or was it a "thrilling'' moment? Or was it neither?

The two local papers had each perspective covered when it came to Sammy Sosa’s 600th home run.

Here’s the way the Dallas Morning News wrote it:

For a moment Wednesday night, just before the fireworks exploded against an ebony sky and the music from The Natural wafted through Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, all of the turmoil that has nearly choked the life out of Sammy Sosa's baseball career faded.

Hmm. Something “wafted’’ through “the ebony sky’’? Sounds romantic. Who knew Grantland Rice owned a keyboard?!

Here’s the phrases the Fort Worth Star-Telegram used:

Sosa “pointed his index finger to the sky, pumped his fist and clapped his hands.’’ … “Sosa waved and blew kisses to the crowd.’’ … “chants of ‘Sammy! Sammy!’’ … “I honestly got a chill through my body,’’ Gerald Laird said. … “’It’s a great joy to be there with the greatest,’ Sosa said.’’ …

Hmm. “A chill through my body’’? Sounds thrilling. Like a little boy describing his first visit to a circus!

I may be disqualified from commentary here, because I didn’t even make it out to The Picnic Grounds in Arlington on Wednesday. Honestly, I didn’t even watch the homer live on TV; I was busy watching “AFI’s 100 Films In 100 Years.’’ Plus, I had laundry to do and all. (And then there is my sadness over baseball's slow death, that bothersome steroid thing, the Rangers' long-term suckitude, and my natural-born cynicism.)

But for me, Sammy Sosa hitting his 600th home run is. ... well, it's certainly a cause for pause during this Rangers season. “Romantic’’? Not exactly. “Thrilling’’? Not exactly.

I’m going to go with this: It’s akin to being deep asleep, then having to get out of bed because your wife thinks she heard a noise. YOu roll your eyes, you check out the commotion, and you go back to sleep.

Now, now, Rangers fans. Everything is returned to normal. May I tuck you back into bed, sweetie? Get you a glass of warm milk, maybe?

C'mon Fish,

I agree there was a lot of "not exactly" about the whole thing, and I cannot bring myself to think of Sosa in the same league as Ruth, Aaron, Mays and that other guy. But 600 is 600, and given the Rangers' season, it's at least, uh, nice.

It was neither romantic nor thrilling, being tainted with Sammy's steroids use, and his lies to the Congressional committee, and his unprofessional abandonment of his team on the last day of his final season with the Cubs. At least he stayed true to form: when his team won the game in which he hit #600, he failed to join them on the field after the game for the traditional celebratory hand slaps. It always was just about Sammy, and it still is.
