Oakley’s well-publicized attack on Leppert is one of several miscues, yet it will prove to be most crucial. Attacking his record as CEO of Turner Construction is one thing, but making him look like some kind of freak is another. Leppert, who has a mild facial tic, is shown three separate times in Oakley’s ad twitching and blinking. This was clearly below the belt and has no place in politics. Imagine if Leppert had footage of Oakley kissing a man and aired that in an ad. Oakley would have been outraged. When asked about it in the debate on Channel 8, Oakley claimed he was unaware of Leppert’s facial tic and didn’t use the footage to embarrass him. That was a flat-out lie. If you can watch that ad and claim there was no intent to embarrass Leppert, then you are simply blinded by your politics. The recent endorsement of Leppert by Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill, a fellow Democrat and Southern sector council member, is another big strike against Oakley. Hill, someone who should have made the runoff if it wasn’t for poor campaign decisions, finished third in the election and ran a campaign similar to that of Oakley. For someone preaching consensus building in the council, a shunning by Hill is quite a slap in the face. Speaking of endorsements, Oakley’s backing by the Dallas County Democratic Party will likely work against him as he desperately seeks votes in the North. Oakley distanced from the endorsement, claiming he didn’t ask for it. However, it was Oakley who claimed party affiliation in a nonpartisan race in a mailer he sent out to Southern Oakley also misfired in the CBS 11 Debate when Tracy Rowlett asked both candidates to name one thing they would change in the City of Oakley was caught backing an effort by council member Bill Blaydes, who just so happens to support Oakley’s campaign for mayor, to rezone property owned by a northeast "I've been a little bit busy with the race," Oakley said. "It should have never happened and I should have paid a little more attention." Well, it’s a little bit unsettling to know Oakley’s lack of attention could have cost a man a business he’s had for more than 50 years. As chair of the Trinity River Committee, it has been no surprise that Oakley is against the referendum to stop the toll road from running through In the debate on CBS 11, Oakley mentioned that building the toll road down Oakley also said the Industrial alignment would be eight to 10 lanes, yet looking at the alignment on the NTTA Web site, it shows six lanes. The plans clearly show there will be three general purpose lanes in each direction. Now I’m hardy an expert on this project, but Oakley definitely should be and based on what he’s saying, he clearly is not. Finally, Oakley’s idea that It’s time for all the local writers to tear up their stories about how

written by Feelin' The Love , June 08, 2007 Making an exhibit of Leppert's facial tics is nothing but an attempt to create the impression that he is "shifty." It is no different than making an exhibit of his confinement in a wheelchair, if he were so confined. Or, for that matter, Leppert making an exhibit of Oakley's orientation, which Leppert has not. It's disgusting. When does the Dallas County Democratic Party pull its endorsement? They should, just for this, but they won't. They'll just ignore it, like the hypocrites they are. Before you say it, no, I'm not a Leppert supporter. I don't even live in the City of Dallas, so I have no direct stake one way or another.

written by Arlington's a suburb (gag) , June 08, 2007 Dallas will miss out on a superbowl? Riiiiiight. Everyone wants to party in Arlington. Maybe they should move the trinity tollroad over there since there will be so much traffic.

written by Dave Thomas , June 08, 2007 This assessment of the race is pretty much on target. I was on the fence about this election until Oakley went negative. He's blown it. He's shown that he's just not ready for the big boy's chair - and Tom Leppert clearly is.

written by chaselaw , June 08, 2007 First of all -- note to Betty. Blogs are and always have been "opinion". It is your responsibility to distinguish blogs from news stories. Don't blame the writer if you don't know the difference. Second -- I'm amazed no one has asked a simple question -- if tearing down crime-infested apartment complexes is such a great plan for Dallas, why hasn't Oakley done that in his own district over the 6 years he has been its councilman ... cause I gotta tell ya' he has lots of crime infested apartment complexes in his district, and they're all still standing. Finally, Oakley didn't step up to save the Cowboys because he agreed completely with Laura on that issue and is flipflopping now to save face. I heard it from his own mouth in a semi-private setting: "The deal Jerry Jones presented to us was a bad deal for Dallas. There's no way we should have approved what he wanted." Why he's saying something different now is...well...for you to decide.

written by Elsbeth , June 09, 2007 Interesting analysis, Sam. I must say, I'm confused. I had no idea that the biggest fear for Dallas is that it might become just like San Francisco. Maybe that's even more reason to build the bridges. The Golden Gate is incredible. But what about this: http://tinyurl.com/3ymnlc If we build all of them, they will come...and they'll come for the jazz, the theatre, the opera, the dance, the orchestras, the museums and even the basketball, too. Dallas, Texas ~ it's a hell of a town.

written by Roger Herrera , June 09, 2007 I think Tom Leppert is the better choice of the two by a mile. That's my impression from spending 30 hours or so with him and the original gang of 11 mayoral candidates. Oakley does not tell the truth. (I said that nicely). Laura Miller, a Democrat, did an awful job. The mayor's job is not partisan. I participated in about 20 mayoral forums. At the first forum hosted by Stonewall (Gay) Democrats, I was heckeled by two different sides of the room. One of the hecklers was Shannon Bailey. Dallas County Human Being First.

written by Elsbeth , June 09, 2007 Sam, Why do you move my comments down the thread when others have blogs that are more in line with your opinion? Maybe there's an answer to that you can provide for me. Oh, and since you seem to be "endorsing" Tom Leppert, you must know why he was quoted in a story just last year (Nation's Building News 2006) about building a home in a Florida resort. Was he really living in Dallas full time? He seems to be an expert on forward hedging. http://tinyurl.com/ytmpmf ["Thomas Leppert, chairman & CEO, Turner Construction, a nationwide builder headquartered in New York, said builders need to anticipate price spikes, find alternative sources for materials and manage their expectations effectively in order to better control land and materials costs. "We have utilized the strength of our buying power to frame agreements. We have been able to lock in prices with the option to reduce prices if prices go down," Leppert said. Forward hedging, buying the equivalent value of a particular material needed for a project or projects in the commodities market, is one way to control costs, or at least survive price spikes, Leppert added. "Forward hedging is not restricted to large organizations," he said. Leppert used forward hedging when building his own home in a Florida resort area. "I went into the commodity market and bought the equivalent value of a forward contract on lumber for my home to make sure I didn’t get hurt on lumber," he said.'] (End of excerpt)

written by Dante , June 10, 2007 Don Hill's campaign treasurer has confirmed that Don Hill wanted to endorse Ed but insisted on $750,000 to fund his staff. Now makes you wonder what Tom did to get Don on board. Probably a "twitch" I mean "wink wink" he would take care of his financial needs after the election. (Sorry for the "twitch" comment...trying to lighten things up a bit.:) Now the gay card is being played (again) as the phone blitz on Ed's sexual preference has started again. Just received one on my voice mail. Guess we know who was the source the first go around. As a straight man, I see this no different than the "twitch" commercial. This strategy is just not as public and is more like a "whispering" type action. I agree the "twitch" ad was below the belt but I certainly am not going to make that a deciding issue in this important race That would be pretty naive and I hope others agree stay focused on the real issues. The Bill Blaydes issue is so irrelevant. Come on, you can always vote to put something on the council agenda and then later learn the hard facts to make a decision on the issue. I don't see this as a flip-flop, just hearing the debate at the council meeting and making an informed decision. This election has gotten ugly on both sides. Call a "spade a spade" and not just dump on Ed. Still on the fence but moving more toward someone with working knowledge of the city with tangible accomplishments based on his history. Tom has no history with Dallas and just talk about "big picture" stuff with no substance. Sam...your article was interesting but a tad one-side for my liking.

written by David , June 11, 2007 Well with the southern sector turning out in greater numbers than the north in early voting, I don't think this vote is over. Actually Oakley should have this thing in the bag. Recent polling shows him up whether it is from Republican pollers Murphy and Turner or WFAA.com. Oakley has spent half the amount of money that Leppert has and Leppert is just able to get even with Oakley in support. Clearly Oakley's message is greater than Leppert's dishing out of money.

written by Run - the Gays are here... , June 13, 2007 The anti-gay phone calls are just as far below the belt as the twitching eye commercials. Is there a problem promoting this side of the story as equally disgusting as it is? Ahh, no we cannot. Because gay baiting is socially acceptable in "Good ol' Boy" land and plays to the folks bigger fears of some radical widespread gay agenda. If there is an agenda, go ask the Conservatives. Their agenda has been placated over and over for years to prevent liberty and justice for all. People, this includes gay's also! So, with BIG money, BIG business and a little "Hail Mary" from Mr Roger Staubach himself - We might as well get used to hearing "Mayor Leppert".

Ed Oakley had an uphill battle after finishing second to Tom Leppert in the May 12 mayoral election.
