INDY 500 SET TO BE HISTORIC RACE PDF Print E-mail
by Austin Kilgore    Thu, May 24, 2007, 04:33 PM

The 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 is on Sunday, and “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” will be a historic one, with three female drivers slated to start in the 33-car field for the first time in the race’s history.

Danica Patrick is in her third season of IRL racing, and is the only female driver to ever lead laps in the Indy 500. Despite her historic fourth place finish in the 2005 race, Patrick has yet to take her car to Victory Lane and only has four top-five finishes.

Sarah Fisher is making her first full season campaign in IRL since 2003, and this weekend will be her fifth Indy 500. Fisher has struggled so far this season, she has yet to earn a top five finish and has an average finish of 13th this year.

Rookie Milka Duno has only run one IRL race in her career, but the Venezuelan native is no stranger to racecars. Duno is in her third season of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, and has one win under her belt at the Homestead-Miami racetrack.

In addition to the trio of women in the race, fans will have their eyes on the trio of Andrettis competing on Sunday.

Marco Andretti, grandson to racing legend Mario, will again be joined on the track by his father, Michael. The duo will attempt to better their second and third place finishes in last year’s race.

This year they will be joined by cousin John Andretti in hopes one of the three can end the family’s 38-year Brickyard drought that dates back to Mario Andretti’s 1969 Indy 500 win.

John Andretti races in the NASCAR Busch and Nextel Cup Series, and Sunday will be his first Indy 500 appearance since 1994.

Coverage begins at 11 a.m. on ABC.
